Cross-posted at Really? Seriously?
Good morning from my office perched betwixt two stadiums in Seattle. It is almost Zero-Eight-Hundred and it is 61°F and sunny, with a high forecast of around 80°F later today.
Apparently I missed all the excitement last night with the Aurora Borealis. I slept right through it. I am not easily excited by such things. But hey, here’s a song for you:
Under The Milky Way – The Church
What does excite me is the fact that I’ve just produced a working model of my Asset Tracking program on a hand-held Windows Tablet. I am using an MS Access front end on a SQL-Server backend located on a server on Amazon. Our housekeeping inspectors can create maintenance work orders online as they inspect the rooms, and engineers can instantly get the work order on their tablet. The engineer completes the work order and it is recorded in the system. If, sometime down the road I need to look up the history of a room or something within that room, I can see what was done when, and the cost associated with that repair. This will allow me to use this data to create a “predictive maintenance” program to predict future costs and repairs on that particular item.
For example, all of our rooms have 65″ LG Televisions that were installed between 2015 and 2016. Many of these televisions have developed white spots on the screen where the LED diffusers have come undone and have dropped out of the back. These televisions are almost ten years old, and are now considered “EOL” or “End Of Life” based on the average life of a hotel television. My program was able to predict when these televisions would start failing, which allowed us to proactively order a new batch of televisions — before the old ones actually started failing.
It’s pretty much been a pipe-dream of mine to eventually put my program online like this. Now I’ve actually gone and done it.
Okay, let’s get on with the news…
Headlines That Caught My Eye This Morning
Item 1: Solar storm hits Earth, producing colorful light shows across Northern Hemisphere
As I said above, I slept right through it.
Item 2: Trump campaign considering Nikki Haley for VP
Is Nikki Haley considering this? I would be awful disappointed if she were, because I actually believed her when she said there was NO way she would ever consider running WITH Trump.
Item 3: Steve Bannon is heading to JAIL as appeals court upholds his conviction
GOOD. The man is a criminal with not just this conviction, but was also pardoned by Trump on even more serious fraud charges, and faces more right now.
Item 4: ‘Madman in a circular room screaming’: ex-aide’s verdict on Trump in book
Remember when Trump was making all that noise about “going after” the people who did all of the leaking out of the Trump White House?
Turns out that Trump himself did a fair amount of leaking…
Item 5: Paul Manafort, poised to rejoin Trump world, aided Chinese media deal
Speaking of criminals, here is another Trump character about to make a return to Trump World. Another criminal that Trump pardoned in the middle of a seven-year felony sentence is coming back to work for Trump.
You are who you hang with.
Item 6: IRS Audit of Trump Could Cost Former President More Than $100 Million
The man was caught double-dipping AGAIN.
Item 7: Plenty of older adults are having sex, and they’re getting STIs, too
Ew.
Item 8: Virginia school board votes to restore names of Confederate leaders to schools
“We believe that revisiting this decision is essential to honor our community’s heritage and respect the wishes of the majority,”
If your “community heritage” centers around slavery and racist attitudes, then I question the “honor” of that community.
Item 9: Bernie Sanders is running for Senate reelection, squelching retirement rumors
For fuck’s sake… stop already.

American Tune – Paul Simon
American Tune – Paul Simon
Many’s the time I’ve been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and I’ve often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I’m all right, I’m all right
I’m just weary to my bones
Still, you don’t expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home
I don’t know a soul who’s not been battered
I don’t have a friend who feels at ease
I don’t know a dream that’s not been shattered
Or driven to its knees
Oh, but it’s all right, it’s all right
For lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road
We’re traveling on
I wonder what went wrong
I can’t help it, I wonder what’s gone wrong
And I dreamed I was dying
And I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying
Oh, we come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age’s most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
Oh, it’s all right, it’s all right
It’s all right, it’s all right
You can’t be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow’s going to be another working day
And I’m trying to get some rest
That’s all I’m trying to get some rest
