Life in the sand pit on 9-11

Sorry for my absence folks – I’ve been on a hiatus, got some time home and doing what I do, I generally make all efforts to NOT play on computers and screw around on the intertubes during those times. Not that I could if I wanted to – you go traipsing around the globe for 6-7 months at a time – you’d be amazed at the length of the Honey-Do list when you get back to home and hearth. It’s enough to make John Holmes willy look like a Vienna Sausage ….Of course there was dead animals to smoke, trips to see the parents, whiskey to be consumed – gotta say I have a new appreciation for  Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon – tasty stuff!

So that’s where I be at an shiz…as the urban yute would say…

Anyhow, So what’s it really like in the Middle East on the 12th Anniversary of 9-11 you ask?

It’s not “tense” per say, life goes on pretty much as it always does over here, but there were things setting off my security buzzers in my head all day…..One of the best security practices you can do over here is – watch for little changes – changes in the normal everyday routines, and they were seemingly coming hot and fast today.

A cop out in the neighborhood melee that is caused every morning by the School near by – there’s no pretty yellow buses taking the kiddies to school over here, it’s every man, woman, and child for themselves and in the area of the schools at 7:30 in the morning – it complete and utter bedlam. The cops seem to generally avoid the whole mess and let the locals duke it out as they will – but not this morning. A cop was stationed by the school barking orders across his cruiser’s loud speakers – I think he actually made the problem worse, but there he was….Change….

While Q8 is predominately Sunni….There is a large Shia contingent from Iran here – The same Iran with close ties to Syria …so there’s reason for concern….

Then you have to wonder – just what did happen to the 10’s of thousands of US Supplied M-16’s that walked out of a warehouse here….no one seems to know but I got a feeling we’ll one day see those same M-16’s – in Syria – Libya, let’s hope they don’t start popping up in the local streets here.

So I head off to work ….An armed police officer roaming around the break down lanes of one of the highways here – there’s traffic cops here, who are not armed, they do next to nothing other than call the meat wagon to come pick up the torn and bloody bodies after the fact,  in fact go buzzing by one of them at 100mph…they won’t so much as bat an eye. Then there are the “black and white” cruisers prowling around – they are armed. What was he doing out there ? Watching the traffic flow by …. but the buzzers went off….that’s a change – you don’t see it ever….strange.

I did get a chuckle, that Cop must have had a set of Cojones on him the size of grapefruit – wandering around the breakdown lanes in rush hour traffic in Kuwait is suicidal…and then of course being suddenly aware of something that seemed hinky to me – I started doing the scan looking for an egress making a plan to E& E – it’s the way you do business over here. I noted too that if he was out there as some sort of show of security or force for some reason…with all the money they have pouring into this place from oil…they might want to think about giving officer friendly something better than a revolver – it looked to be probably a .38 but it was certainly a 6 shooter. The Gun belt and holster seemed to be ill fitted and the damn weapon was hanging down around his knee, I was afraid he was going to trip over the damn thing and fall, too many spaghetti westerns maybe… ….Kind of funny, but the buzzer went off all the same.

Pulled onto the Job site and no where to park, which set off another buzzer in my head – Place was full – why? This place is never this busy unless there is an exercise going on….and there is no exercises on the burners… Hinky.

Maybe ‘The One’s” clusterfuck of a fail in Syria has them stirred up over here, there are a good number of Syrians in the population here….maybe its just the day itself, the Kuwaitis take a dim view of splodydopes making a mess of things….and splodeydopes do so love to make a statement on anniversarys …so they ramped up security a bit ….I don’t know – I talked to a few military folks but they weren’t talking much about anything ….actually got the feeling there was something no one wanted to talk about.

Anyhell – That’s what the 12th Anniversary of 9-11 was like here in the sandpit – oh and still hellishly hot in case your wondering… but it’s ‘cooling off’ some it was only a 109 today….mheh.

Muchas Grassyass for the update, good Sir.

I’m just waitin’ for the fallout from the Million Muzzy March / Pork BBQ and the Thundering Herd “interaction” (no permit needed, BTW, for the Herd, no matter WHAT the ProgNazis say….)

Keep doin’ what you do best, and hurry home safe and sound. :em01:

Keep your eyes on the skies, my friend. What you were saying about awareness is absolutely correct. Maybe there weren’t any official briefings, but the time frame lead to additional precautions subconsciously. Cover your 6.
