Want More?

Recipients of NEA grants are now being “asked” (nice little grant you got there, would be a real shame if it were to be, well, stopped) to create propaganda for Unser Führer.

Bald weh’n Obama-Fahnen über alle Straßen…

Don’t talk of dust and roses
Or should we powder our noses?
Don’t live for last year’s capers
Give me steel, give me steel, give me pulses unreal

    He’ll build a glass asylum
With just a hint of mayhem
    He’ll build a better whirlpool
We’ll be living from sin, then we can really begin

    Please saviour, save your shores
    Hear me, I’m graphically yours

Someone to claim us, someone to follow
Someone to shame us, some brave Apollo
Someone to rule us, someone like you

We want you Big Brother, Big Brother

I know you think you’re awful square
But you made everyone and you’ve been every where
Lord, I think you’d overdose if you knew what’s going down

Someone to claim us, someone to follow
Someone to shame us, some brave Apollo
Someone to rule us, someone like you
Someone to claim us, someone to follow
Someone to shame us, some brave Apollo

The federal government should not be in the arts business. It is difficult for government to find a sensible middle ground in a lot of things, and this is an area I think it is best for the government to get out of. No control over where NEA money goes and we end up with a crucifix in urine. Too much control and we have government propaganda. Better to leave the arts to the artists and patrons of the arts.

Being a Classical Music lover, I used to tolerate the idea of funding for the arts, because there are several artists who made their living because of state patronage. I knew that it could be dangerous, but I figured it was something good coming out of it. But now Obama has gone and done what was always possible and destroyed one of the few avenues for good to come out of this money.

We’re better off with out it. Dangit.

    Darth Bacon says:

Gummint funding for the arts is ludicrous.

Why do market principles not apply to someone’s precious artistic output- namely that if nobody’s buying or even noticing it, it sucks?

Supporting artists whose art sucks creates two problems- one being the existence of lousy crap which otherwise would have gone ‘un-expressed’, and two, another class of people who believe they deserve special consideration. Then, when the funding dries up, they’re being victimized by the system/cruel social conservatives/the Illuminati, etc.

Enabling people to spend even more time not producing things or services of value is charity, and charity is the province of the private sector. It also eliminates the issue of exactly who or what is judged to be worthy of the government’s generosity with tax dollars.

As far as the astonishing lengths to which the Obama Cadre continues to go in turning various institutions into full-time, dedicated campaign organs for Obama and the DNC, the part about ‘learning the language so we can talk to each other safely‘ is perhaps the most perplexing.

What does ‘safely‘ imply? It seems to either indicate that they wish to communicate in some manner that renders any reading of their intent ‘safe’ from outsiders (artists and their admirers in academia and the public being a notoriously insular bunch- as are Obama cultists), or to indicate that they are concerned with not upsetting the precious sensibilities of the delicate artists upon whom they are dependent for the manufacture of all of this cultish, supposedly spontaneous celebration of Obama and his handlers’ goals.

Either way, it remains that in addition to the notion of paying people to do stuff nobody wants, using taxpayers’ money for things that may offend their core beliefs, and also deciding what merits subsidy, there is the danger of an ambitious President and his cronies subverting an institution of government (and its budget) to openly partisan ends.

So, being female I have to click on the links….under the “ministry of goodspeak” I noticed the sponsors at the bottom:

OBEY??? WTF is that? So I click on it and find it is Shepard Fairey’s site. Yes, the idiot who did the red and blue posters for Obama. Further, I clicked on the “about” link, and found this:

The OBEY sticker attempts to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the sticker and their relationship with their surroundings. Because people are not used to seeing advertisements or propaganda for which the product or motive is not obvious, frequent and novel encounters with the sticker provoke thought and possible frustration, nevertheless revitalizing the viewer’s perception and attention to detail. The sticker has no meaning but exists only to cause people to react, to contemplate and search for meaning in the sticker. Because OBEY has no actual meaning, the various reactions and interpretations of those who view it reflect their personality and the nature of their sensibilities.

Many people who are familiar with the sticker find the image itself amusing, recognizing it as nonsensical, and are able to derive straightforward visual pleasure without burdening themselves with an explanation. The PARANOID OR CONSERVATIVE VIEWER however may be confused by the sticker’s persistent presence and condemn it as an underground cult with subversive intentions. Many stickers have been peeled down by people who were annoyed by them, considering them an eye sore and an act of petty vandalism, which is ironic considering the number of commercial graphic images everyone in American society is assaulted with daily.

I only bolded the text. The words were already in caps.

I don’t know where or if Fairey went to school, but where I come from, the word “OBEY” does have a meaning:

    Obey –verb (used with object)
1.to comply with or follow the commands, restrictions, wishes, or instructions of: to obey one’s parents.
2.to comply with or follow (a command, restriction, wish, instruction, etc.).
3.(of things) to respond conformably in action to: The car obeyed the slightest touch of the steering wheel.
4.to submit or conform in action to (some guiding principle, impulse, one’s conscience, etc.).
    –verb (used without object)
5.to be obedient: to agree to obey

Just a variant of the “Nothing to see here, move along” meme. Ya gotta love the idiocy of the “language really has no objective meaning” liberal wackademic artsy fartsy crowd. They never get to the rudimentary level of thought that alerts sentient beings to the fact that if language had no objective meaning, there could be no communication between people and we’d all wander around in perpetually ignorant isolation from birth to (a very early) death. Fookin’ idjits!
