Long May She Wave

That Ragged Old Flag

I walked through a county courthouse square
On a park bench, an old man was sittin’ there.
I said, “Your old court house is kinda run down,
He said, “Naw, it’ll do for our little town”.

I said, “Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit,
And that’s a ragged old flag you got hangin’ on it”.
He said, “Have a seat”, and I sat down,
“Is this the first time you’ve been to our little town”
I said, “I think it is”

He said “I don’t like to brag, but we’re kinda proud of
That Ragged Old Flag

“You see, we got a little hole in that flag there,
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
and It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it,
writing “Say Can You See”

It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson
tugging at its seams.
and It almost fell at the Alamo
beside the Texas flag,
But she waved on though.

She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on
That Ragged Old Flag

“On Flanders Field in World War I,
She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun,
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp, and low, a time or two,
She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent
by her Uncle Sam.

She waved from our ships upon the briny foam
and now they’ve about quit wavin’ back here at home
in her own good land here She’s been abused,
She’s been burned, dishonored, denied an’ refused,
And the government for which she stands
Has been scandalized throughout out the land.
And she’s getting thread bare, and she’s wearin’ thin,
But she’s in good shape, for the shape she’s in.
Cause she’s been through the fire before
and i believe she can take a whole lot more.

“So we raise her up every morning
And we bring her down slow every night,
We don’t let her touch the ground,
And we fold her up right.
On second thought
I *do* like to brag
Cause I’m mighty proud of
That Ragged Old Flag”

Shamelessly stole this from Glen Beck

At some point during the day, I hope you’ll take time to think and reflect on what it is we’re truly celebrating on the 4th of July — our Independence Day. Of course the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776 but it’s so much more than that. On this day, 233 short years ago, a small group of men dedicated themselves to a higher purpose, an ideal they believed in so greatly, they signed their name to its expression and in doing so put their very lives at risk.

Never has a simple act of signing one’s name carried such weight, such a profound commitment. By signing the Declaration of Independence, 56 men stood in direct defiance of the British government. They became marked men, and willingly so. As I was doing some research on the significance of July 4th, I came across some interesting facts about these men. Today as we all enjoy the freedom our forefathers guaranteed us, join me in honoring the extraordinary sacrifice of 56 extraordinary Americans.

Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence:

Five were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes burned to the ground. Two lost sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, and two more had sons captured. Nine fought and died in the Revolutionary War.

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists, eleven were merchants, and nine were farmers and large plantation owners. They were well educated, smart enough to know that by signing the Declaration of Independence, they were signing their own death warrants. They did it anyway, and God bless them for it.

As we enjoy our liberty on this 4th of July, or any day of any month, we must never take that liberty for granted. Too many have given too much. In the words of the Signers themselves, “For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

Their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor — I think that’s a price paid worth a few minutes of reflection, don’t you? But let’s not be solemn in that reflection. I say rejoice and share this information with your friends and family, especially your kids. The Signers asked for nothing in return for their pledge, but I say that we show our thanks with a pledge of our own: To remember, to be grateful, and to carry on in their spirit. America is the greatest country this world has ever and will ever know, and it will stay that way so long as “we the people” remember that just like in 1776.

Who today would have the courage and conviction to pledge their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor? Very few, I suspect, but it only took a few the first time around. Shall we hang together or separately, only our courage and conviction will decide. When the fireworks are being displayed this weekend and Old Glory is waving high and proud, reflect on the courage and conviction that made this Shining City on the Hill the beacon of light still guiding freedom loving people to our shores to be part of the greatest social experiment in the history of mankind.

It is the charge of those with the courage and conviction to maintain what the founders, at great price, bestowed on us.

Happy and safe Independence Day to all and I will see you in the trenches.

here’s a little patriotic jump start for those of you who don’t feel like celebrating the 4th. It’s one of my favorite patriotic paintings, one that reminds me of what the Continental Army did and what they sacrificed to give us this glorious country.

Mountains out of Mole Hills? Ok…. well then perhaps you can explain something to me that my liitle brain is having a hard time understanding… And that is Obama’s position on Honduras.

So it is a general foreign policy not to be as “meddlesome” as in the past, which was used to explain the response to Iran. Yet when a admittedly leftist President trys to go against his own nations constitution and is told not only by the countrys Supreme Court, but also by the majority of its congress and his own political party (all in a bonafide legal manner) NO you cant do that, and then he continues to do what he wants anyway (in the manner of a dictator) and gets his butt ousted in just about the most non-violent manner ever seen in this area of the world, and Obama speaks out loud and long against THE PEOPLE AND THE SYSTEM as if some wrong was done. I dont get it. And in doing so aligns with Chavez, Castro, and Ortega, can you tell me why I shouldnt have concern? I see absolutly no logic in this response. So I want to know how this is acceptable to anyone? And again I remind you that the Honduran Congess voted against his “referendum”, the Honduran Supreme Court ruled against the “referendum”, and his own POLITICAL PARTY did not support the “referendum”.

BTW, the mistake the Honduran Mil made was that they didn’t terminate the former President. This guy is going to bang his sippy cup until a bunch of people die. There is a lesson to be learned here…..

Watch for the next “molehill”. Reports are coming that Phillipine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is about to amend their constitution unilaterally to extend her term. Since she is fighting a Communist insurgency at the same time that she is fighting a Muslim Jihadist insurgency, can you see the “principle” that guides Buraq Hussein’s actions? The full might of the US will descend on the Phillipines to ensure that Arroyo is removed and especially that a pliant leftist [if not a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front -and no, it’s not that kind of MILF] is installed as “president for life”. And of course, that will just be considered another molehill, by those who have imbibed the Kool-Aid.

Also as a news update in Honduras. The OAS has “suspended” Honduras, at the urging of the “usual suspects” and the Zelaya claims that he will be flying into Tegucigalpa today with the presidents of Argentina and Ecuador and OAS officials accompanying. The Honduran government has declared the airport closed to traffic, and that Zelaya will be arrested if he shows up.. There are also rumors of Zelaya planning to sneak across a land border, but I have my doubts. Neither the press nor the foreign officials will be up to walking into jungle; and the chances of him walking into the jungle and just never walking out [or being heard of again] if they meet the Honduran army are pretty high.

Anybody know what kind of air early warning system they have in Honduras? Or if the Honduran air force uses “FOX-ONE!” and “FOX-TWO!”? They have variants of the F-5 “Skoshi Tiger” and the A-37 that can make life nasty, brutish, and short for an airliner. It might be an act of war, shooting them down, but it is also an act of war to enter a country against its will. If any state tries to escort the airliner, it will be committing an act of war also. The OAS does not over-ride Honduran sovereignty.
