    LC EFA says:

It’s disgusting that this could occur in the USA at all.

Going to become par for the course under President Zero.

    Oh – Foist !

    LC PrimEviL says:

Dammit, EFA, I can’t get a foist no how.
Try requiring English an employment prerogative, Jerks.
This has been going on for some time now. First it’s hit the Media. Imagine that?

The state of Oregon seldom has a clear answer on anything anymore – the tax on beer’s going up 2000% though.

Um, that clip was from last year. At the bottom, the ticker says that high-profile attorneys will be offering pro-bono defense counsel for protesters at the 2008 GOP Convention in Minneapolis.

Still, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a ridiculous requirement, when the workers should be required to speak English, instead of the Supervisor being expected to speak whatever the worker does. What if they hire a Swahili? Or someone who speaks Basque?

    LC BU2 IMotBP says:

    Well… isn’t that completely discriminatory…

You would think that if they were honestly worried about something like this then it would be mandatory to learn the language of crew members BEFORE being promoted to a supervisory position…

Though even then I could see quite a few problems arising if they want to make a safety issue out of it. The first thing that comes to mind would be a supervisor of foreign extraction that speaks heavily accented English. In my own experience accents, even some native accents, if they are heavy enough make someone nearly as difficult to understand as a foreign language might.

Then, there is also the fact that even if English is not legally the official language of the United States, it always has been, and most likely will remain, the de facto official language.

You’re right. It’s been an issue for some time now and we’ll be hearing more about it as the fire season approaches. The Oregon Department of Forestry says it’s all bunk, by the way…

The old saying, “Rumor can run around the world before the truth has got its boots on,” is borne out in information circulating on the web and elsewhere that claims the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) is firing and demoting fire crew bosses that do not speak Spanish.

…except that it’s not, at least insofar as it relates to private contracters ODF hires, that is…

Companies may choose whom they hire for their crews. If a company elects to hire employees who do not speak English, then the supervisors of that crew must speak English as well as the language of any crew members who don’t speak English.

I suspect the vast majority of firefighters called in to suppress a wildfire come from the private sector and are subject to this policy, which will probably get someone killed sooner or later because of a shortage of requisite bi-lingual, bi-sexual, bi-polar and bi-valved personnel available on short notice to fight it.

Outrageous? Fucking INSANE! This is an English speaking nation. Oregon is all the fucking way up near Canada, right? My geography may be a bit rusty, but WTF?

    VonZorch Imperial Researcher says:

I didn’t know about that, but it dosen’t surprise me a bit. Sounds like something The Peoples Soviet Socialist Republic of Oregon would do.
As for being near Canada, here in Hillsboro, at least 10% of the population are Mexicans who speak no English, about another 10% who speak it badly. There are 4 Mexican restaurants for each one of any other type(not complaining about that, I like mexican and some are dead cheap.)

sounds like someone has found a way to get rid of people they otherwise could not touch. don’t like a supervisor? just assign a foreigner to his unit and he is history. does it matter if the new guy can speak fluent english? probably not. politics, politics, politics.

I remember seeing this on the news. Seeing it again is like ripping off a dried scab and pouring sea salt on the open wound. Seriously though, what the hell are people thinking? Everyone in an official position is so damn scared to offend someone and it’s getting out of hand. I say fuck them. They need to learn the language of the land!

Here’s another related article, this time about firefighters in Connecticut being denied promotions because they were not of a minority. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090422/ap_on_go_su_co/us_scotus_firefighters_lawsuit

One quote from the article really pissed me off:

Underlying both cases are broader questions about racial progress and the ongoing need for legal protections from discrimination for minorities, especially after the election of President Barack Obama.

The discrimination lawsuit brought by 20 white firefighters — one also is Hispanic — challenges New Haven’s decision to throw out promotion exams for lieutenants and captains in its fire department.

The city argues that if it had gone ahead with the promotions based on the test results, it would have risked a lawsuit claiming that the exams had a “disparate impact” on minorities in violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

I guess we’re all still a bunch of racists even though, as the article points out, we elected a minority to our highest office. The Race Card ™ lives on. Notice even one of the minority firefighters thought this one was bullshit.

So, as both the article and this video indicate, being a minority and speaking spanish is more important than fighting fires. At least we can all sing Kumbaya as our cities burn.

Hey, that’s a good one. Obama sang Kumbaya as the United States burned. Not as good as Nero fiddling, but hey… still works.

So, basically, these dumbasses are worried more about idiotic racial or whatever quotas than actually fighting fires. Got it. This is so fucking stupid it needs no further elaboration, I just don’t have the patience for it.

    LC Xealot @ 15:

I’ve been following this for a while.

All testees (Mheh) where given the same amount of time and resources to study for the exam, that the blacks couldn’t pass it wasn’t anyones fault but their own.

I heard this morning their advocate was saying that the only reason they couldn’t pass the test was because there was a racially discriminative factor in the test…however, he couldn’t point one out.

If this is what they are going to push, then I guess affirmative action is needed. A Hispanic could pass the the test, but no blacks could? I’m going to take a wild stab here and postulate that someone was counting on getting extra points for their race rather than just the knowledge and experience they bring to the job.

Unless the questions involved something like:

The building is on fire and you find a group of people injured in a room, who do you rescue first?

    A) The White women
    B) The White men
    C) Any others, as long as the Whites are all safe
    D) Call for support and get them all out

I have mentioned this before. The city I live in has the largest population of Armenians living in it outside of Armenia…but…the proportion of Armenians on the police force and fire department do not reflect the population.

They have run study after study on how to “correct” this, and down at the bottom of the report is always the paragraph describing that “in Armenia, these are not professions that are regarded highly”.

    What to do? :em98:

    LC Xealot says:

    SoCalOilMan, LC,

The irony is that I’m part Armenian. There IS a cultural bias on the part of Armenians that people might not understand. Armenia was once part of the Soviet Union — officers of the law are still distrusted there as corrupt, power-hungry people, like they used to be in those days. Some of that bias carries forward even now, and it’s entirely plausible that fewer Armenians are attracted to these positions as a result of that. Also, there is lingering distrust of reactionary extremist governments — like the “young turk” movement in the Ottoman Empire, which perpetuated the Armenian genocide during World War I. In other words, Armenians don’t trust and don’t particularly care for officials of the government.

Given that Armenians are otherwise “white” it follows that it’s not racism causing this. In other words people ought to reason out things before they go around pointing fingers and accusing people of being racist. I’m part Armenian, and the fact that fewer enter those professions doesn’t bother me at all.

Btw.. do you live in Fresno? :p.

I hope every one of the supervisors started on the line as a union man and worked their way up. This way, they only have themselves to blame for this kind of crap. They think it’s all great when they’re the union guy on the line, but then they are suddenly management and it affects them… Well, that’s a different story.

Just let the state burn. They’d get the idea after a while……….or perhaps a Spanish speaking crew, with the supe knowing on Spanish. Then hire an Englisg speaking person. Fat chance, let the fucking state burn up. I did take a serious delight in filling out my absentee ballot yesterday, for the May 19 election here in Kalifornia. I voted against all the tax proposals, voting yes on only one proposal, the one requiring pay to be withheld from any legislators not submitting a balanced budget on time.

LC The Major - Imperial Taunter of the Knave says:

It can all be explained this way:

    Exhibit 1

    o————————–|

This is a line that represents the sum of human knowledge measured from the time the first Congressman proto-human became aware that it could do something more than eat, sleep and procreate to the present moment. The line grows longer every day, but at any given point in time, there is a finite amount of knowledge.

    Exhibit 2

    o————————–>

This is a ray that represents liberal stupidity. It is infinite.

    The MAJOR is BACK!!!

    LC Xealot @ 21:

    do you live in Fresno?

No…My name refers to the real SoCal. I live in La Crescenta just north of Glendale in the foothills of the Los Angeles Basin.

Armenia was once part of the Soviet Union — officers of the law are still distrusted there as corrupt, power-hungry people, like they used to be in those days. Some of that bias carries forward even now, and it’s entirely plausible that fewer Armenians are attracted to these positions as a result of that.

I can understand that………….but, our Mayor is Armenian and 3 of the council seats are Armenian. They’re good enough to set the laws and regulations, but enforcing them should be left to someone else?

Frankly I don’t think anyone really cares how many Armenians police officers there are. Including the Armenians. It’s mainly some outside activists that like to look only at numbers on paper, not cause, and condemn the city as racist.

Fresno is the other city with a large concentration of Armenians. I think there are more in Fresno than in Glendale, but I could be wrong. In any case, I certainly have a lot of Armenian relatives there.

In any case, I only add that bit because I remember my grandfather’s distaste for government types, especially those who enforced the law. He told many stories about the genocide and the communist government that followed. Yet, oddly, he worked as a civil servant for almost 40 years. I think it was merely the act of enforcement that he disliked; i.e. he felt that government could order police to do terrible things. It’s very understandable, given the environment he left as a child. He probably would have shit a brick if I became a policeman.

But, as you say, I don’t think any Armenians are claiming racism on that, and it would be ridiculous to suggest such a thing. If Armenians suffer any sort of racism in this country, it’s for being white, christian and generally anti-socialist ;). That’s an evil enough offense in the minds of the leftists, I’m sure.

More in line with the subject of this post: my grandfather learned to speak English before coming to this country, and insisted his family speak English first, and Armenian second. Why can’t these Hispanic immigrants do the same?

  34. 34
    VonZorch Imperial Researcher says:

    LC Xealot sez:

Why can’t these Hispanic immigrants do the same?

Because most of them do not consider themselves immigrants but expatriates. And many of them plan on going back home, I wish they would go now.

  35. 35
    Spatial Ed says:

Pretending to not speak English is not restricted to immigrants to the US. When I was enforcing laws in a military community in Germany, I had several occasions to stop German nationals in their cars. They know that the Polezei are required to speak English, but there’s no requirement for American MPs to speak German, so they’d say in German that they didn’t speak English. And I’d reply in the (American-accented) local dialect that there was no problem with that, and I needed to see their license, registration and proof of insurance. Their English immediately improved.

The problems with Oregon and Washington are largely west of the Cascade Mountains. The eastern sides, much larger in area but lower in population, are as red as Idaho and Utah.

And folks there generally don’t give a crap what your ancestors were, but what you are. i.e. trustworthy, able-bodied, sick, lame, lazy, usw.
