Congrats all Around!

We interrupt the regularly scheduled outbursts of cynical sarcasm to bring you the news that our sestrichka Nicki now has herself her very own Marine, her daughter Sarah!

And to let you know we can’t believe that it has been that long since she went off to Parris Island.

OORAH!

    Nicki,

Remember don’t hold back on that letter about the DI and his shitty attitude. Its not like she was getting married just once in her life. To quote Joe Bite-Me “This was a big Effen deal.

And it still bothers me that they had to have a separate Ceremony for the females at a different location. Nothing says part of the whole like Separate but Equal.

Congrats Sarah. The Military fraternity may be common with the old farts who comment here but I assure you it is very uncommon in our culture to achieve what you have done.

Thanks, you guys! I completely agree with the whole separate ceremony thing. It’s ridiculous! I’m also in the process of composing a letter to MCRD, and I will definitely mention this. It was appalling! The female DI was actually appropriately shocked and appalled. The male NCO (not sure whether he was a DI, because he didn’t have his cover on) was the one who shrugged it off, like “who gives a shit!”

She’ll be doing crypto linguistics. :)

And yes, I’ll post a copy once I compose it!

As I told my darling rugrat some years ago before she enlisted, Sarah will find there’s a shared bond between millions of people those who didn’t do a stint in the service will never know. Everything will look and seem different to Sarah now – even her old friends from the high school days. That’s not a bad thing but it’s just how things are.

My guess is the “Ginger Child” will be following Miss Sarah’s example at his first opportunity. Make sure he picks something to set him on a good career path in or out of the MIL.

You did good, Nicki. Even though I was Navy, the Marines use the same schools – best in the business.

Congrats again for about the third time – you and she deserve it.

I let her read all this stuff. She’s actually going back there today for her boyfriend’s graduation. They went in a week apart. She’s driving down with his dad. I’m so proud of her, and I’m so humbled by all of you and your kind thoughts! :)

    To our newest Marine.

Didnt think you’d make it, did you?

I knew you would. I never doubted it.

Young lady, you now have two families of whom you can be absolutely and utterly proud. Your own, especially your mother who has been, and I believe always will be, a source of strength and courage, and of that rarest of gifts, unquestioning, unstoppable, never ending love. Cherish her always, LISTEN to her..you have made one more journey, but that journey,. and others to come, will never be complete unless there are others that love you to witness and share that wonderful time.

The other wears green. See that globe and anchor on your uniform? That is your badge of honour, and the hallmark of one who has become part of a tradition spanning hundreds of years. That banner, that standard is yours now.

    Carry it well.

    Carry it with pride.

    Carry it with honour.

Know that what you have accomplished walks in the footsteps of great warriors. Semper Fidelis, always faithful..to your duty, to your brothers and sisters of the Corps, to YOURSELF more than any other, since it rests not with others, but with you alone, to carry that tradition forward with the dignity and respect that it is due.

They are your family now, wherever you may go, from now until forever.

I am proud of you, now and always.

    God bless and keep you…Marine.

I forgot you don’t have Facebook. Here’s an update.

For those of you who were wondering, I did contact the commander of MCRD about the issue we encountered at Sarah’s graduation ceremony. I wrote him an email explaining the situation and at the end of the email, I thanked him and the Marines for the incredible change in my daughter. To my surprise, instead of an email promising to look into it, Col. Haas called me at the office. We had about a 20 minute conversation about what went wrong and how those issues can be avoided in the future. We discussed some concrete solutions that would help ensure that no family would miss their loved ones’ graduation, and at the end chatted about Sarah, work, military, etc. Col. Haas is a fantastic example of the dedicated, competent leadership in our military. I’m awed by his commitment to the troops, their families and service to the nation!

We really did discuss things at length. He told me a few things, and listened to my suggestions.

    a) The decision to hold the ceremony inside is pretty rare, and it was made at 0630. He asked me who told me about the changes, and I told him it was other parents. Someone put out wrong information and it spread. Whoever spread the word about it first being outside, then inside, then outside and then inside again fomented massive confusion. He’s working on finding out who did that.

    b) The reason they had separate graduations was because of space considerations – not for the platoons, but for the families. They didn’t want to limit the families and cut off access to people who wanted to see the graduation, but there were only so many seats. He’s trying to find out how best to have a VIP at both ceremonies, if this should ever happen again. But given how rare women’s graduations are, because there are so few of them, he doesn’t think that will be an issue. The stars would have to align just so… women graduating in the first place and weather bad enough to hold indoor ceremonies.

    c) Next time, if they do have separate ceremonies, he will work with the base to ensure there are those electronic signs all around the base, informing families that the venue has changed early in the morning. There was an electronic sign, pointing us in the direction of family day at the main traffic circle, so there should be no problem to get one or several that also inform visitors that the venue for the graduation has changed. That was my suggestion.

He thanked me for bringing this stuff to his attention. He says he almost never gets constructive feedback, so this was really good to know. He’s only been there for six months, so he’s learning too.

He asked how Sarah was doing, and I told him she was great and that she is helping promote the Marine Corps at her school, then going to MCT, and then go to DLI. He was really impressed with that, and I told him that she comes from a family of military folks and that I was a linguist too, so it’s not surprising she wanted to do this. He asked me about my work at my old agency and we chatted about my current job.

He took time. He talked to me. I appreciate that, and the personal phone call.

My sister went to the LI in Monterey for her stint in Uncle Sam’s Flying Air Circus, she was a Radio Intercept operator. Long story.

I had the pleasure to go to Lompoc/Vandyland for a “foot shot” of our Minot Minuteman missle back in ’76, so tell her to look for the Operational Test launches while she’s at Monterey (look south).

Ooops! Sorry, darling! MCT is Marine Combat Training – it’s infantry training for non-infantry MOSs. It’s about a month in the field, shooting all kinds of shit, being dirty, cold and miserable.

DLI is the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, CA..
