AS NSW burns into the night, with new fires starting even at 8pm, firefighters are bracing for another dangerous day tomorrow.

As seven fires have taken hold and burning out of control, dubbed “the worst in a decade or more” by RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons, he has tonight warned containment will only come when conditions start to ease – but there is not a wet day in sight

Newcastle airport is closed. Fires in Springwood, Winmalee, the line has jumped the Nepean River. Up to forty homes lost, no lives lost..yet

Pray for us.

UPDATE: One dead.

Police confirmed the first fatality of the disaster this morning. A 63-year-old man died in the NSW Central Coast yesterday after he collapsed while defending his Lake Munmorah home. Two volunteer firefighters are being treated in hospital, NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell said.

Condolences to his family, and my deepest thanks and respect to the firefighters still out there.

    Tallulah growls and barks:

Brendan, do they know the cause? We’ve had huge wildfires, too, and there are suspicions of arson in many cases: some say the Moslems are using arson as yet another terror tactic.

Be that as it may, I will pray for you. Hope you can get this under control soon!

No. Thats for later. Right now we get on with the job at hand.

The fires will be investigated..but for now our resources are where they need to be.

    LC ShadowFox growls and barks:

    Damn Brother, stay strong.

Tallulah: In both the American West and Outback fire is just a natural part of life. During the summer things dry out and because there’s never enough rain for decomposition, many plants actually need fire to reproduce (open sealed seed pods, return nutrients to the soil, etc). Dry thunderstorms will roll over the land, especially at night, and the next thing you know lightening strikes have started dozens of small fires. Some burn out, some are put out but some hit the right spot of fuel and just explode. There’s nothing you can do but evacuate people and attempt property defense where you can. It’s why proper landscaping (aka defensible space) is so important in our areas.

Unfortunately as that man found the hard way, staying to attempt that defense yourself is NOT an option and always ends the same.

    LCBrendan growls and barks:

Aside from possiblities that the fires mat have been arson, there are NO indications of anything other than this is the summer season. No Muslim intervention if thats whats worrying you….not part of this at all.

A LARGE fire burning in Lithgow on the western side of the NSW Blue Mountains is threatening 20 properties, sparking an emergency warning. The Rural Fire Service says a large fire is burning between Lithgow and Bilpin and is a threat to properties in areas including Bell and Dargan, and Berambing and Bilpin.

The RFS says the blaze, which has burnt through 30,000 hectares, is threatening properties in the small township of Bell and residents are advised to take shelter. “Fire activity has intensified in the Bell area,” a spokesman said.”There’s about 20 properties in the community of Bell which are under threat at the moment. “We have upgraded it to an emergency warning and we’re sending out emergency alert phone messages in that area right now.”

    And this

Meanwhile, two girls aged 12 and 13 have been accused of trying to start a fire in a western Sydney reserve on Friday. They were arrested, questioned and released. Premier Barry O’Farrell slammed the alleged actions of the girls as “sheer stupidity”.

In the old days those kids would go home and be spanked until their precious little asses were red. If they did do this, then they can expect no mercy from the judge.

Also word of possible looters, a tweet from the area has basically told those , if they were doing this, to pray the cops get them before anyone else does.

As for the rest, the RFS is up to the challenge and these people are proving yet again that Aussies make the best firefighters anywhere.

    THE PLAN in action

The alert RFS chiefs immediately reached for the button. A button that undeniably saved lives. In an instant, every resident, homeowner or even visitor in the vicinity of Springwood, YellowRock and Winmalee either received a text message or an automated phone call warning of the impending disaster. It was a simple message, sent on the stroke of 2pm.

Drop what you are doing, and make a hasty retreat for shelter. No time to gather your belongings, just get out. It was not ambiguous; it didn’t give residents the option of staying and fighting the flames, it just recommended urgent shelter and to “protect yourself from the ambient heat” when _ not if _ the fire comes. “As soon as we realised that we weren’t going to catch that fire, the decision was made and the messages and phone calls went out,” Rogers says. Nine different messages went out to the public in the next hour, keeping them intimately informed. Facebook sites were immediately updated. Twitter feeds were hijacked with reams of information dumped to followers.

We prepare for the worst. hope for the best, and in all truth, I consider what we have in place is one of the best systems anywhere.

    We got this.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott joins Davidson Rural Fire Brigade to fight NSW bushfires

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has taken a break from running the country to help fire crews fight the bushfires gripping NSW as a volunteer firefighter. Mr Abbott worked a night shift helping back burn near Bilpinwith his Davidson Rural Fire Brigade from Sydney’s Warringah Pittwater Rural Fire District. NSW Rural Fires Service volunteer Tova Gallagher said she couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw Prime Minister Tony Abbott decked out in his NSWRFS uniform.

Ms Gallagher, who herself is in the area fighting fires, said she didn’t recognise the PM at first.

    and sadly this as well

TWO young girls who allegedly started a fire in Sydney’s west on Friday have been charged by police. As 1500 firefighters battled nearly 100 devastating bushfires across the state, police say the girls – aged 12 and 13 – were seen running away from a large grass fire in a Bonnyrigg reserve shortly before 1pm. At the time of the incident, more than 100 homes across NSW had already been lost and emergency services were battling raging infernos in hot, dry, windy conditions.

Earlier, officers had been told by members of the public the girls were seen starting fires in the park that runs between Elizabeth Drive and Smithfield Road. The blaze is said to have ignited 20 to 30 square metres of grassland and required the efforts of Fire and Rescue NSW to be brought under control.

Damn them to HELL. And where the FUCK are their parents???

Folks, if you permit, I will post updates in this thread. I know this isnt an American thing and you have your own issues, but if you like I’ll keep you apprised.

RFS tells families to be ready to run as NSW’s 300km wall of fire continues its destruction

IT’S going to be even worse than we thought – fire chiefs have warned families across Sydney’s west to brace themselves as the massive 300km wall of fire sweeping through the Blue Mountains could see Leura, Katoomba and Blackheath evacuated today. With no respite expected in the hot and windy weather, Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the fire storm could burn along the Blue Mountains ridge to Sydney’s west and into the Nepean area over the next three days.

remier Barry O’Farrell yesterday signed a Disaster Declaration Order because of the “widespread danger to life and property” and families have been told to prepare to flee or face forced evacuations. “The RFS Commissioner has advised weather conditions over the next few days will deteriorate significantly and there is potential for a significant and widespread danger to life and property across the state,” Mr O’Farrell said.

Because he didn’t understand what it meant.
