I Wish I Had Better News… (Stuck for now, new posts below)

It pains my heart, hurts me to the very core of my being to write this. This, which should have been a joyous update to our “Christmas in June” project.

But at least I can tell you all what has been going on.

The whole “plot”, which those of you who wrote to ask already know, was to ferry one of Caveman (Kent)’s dearest friends out to visit with him while he’s still around. As much for moral support as for anything else. Obviously, as this was to be a surprise to Kent, I could not post as such on the site.

You all, as always, responded generously and the funds needed were in hand rapidly, so the plan looked to be able to go forward.

And that’s when fate struck a cruel blow: Apparently Kent has been deteriorating fast, faster than anybody had expected, as is now barely coherent even on the few occasions when he’s even awake. Indeed, I was just informed that it is unlikely that he’ll last much longer at all and, as such, a visit would no longer help anybody if it could even be made in time. Our beloved friend, and once again it hurts to even write this, the room is getting dusty something fierce here, isn’t likely to be among us for much longer.

I know I’m not the only one in this community who is shocked to learn that, even though we knew his diagnosis. I don’t think that any of us had expected, even feared that it would go so fast. I know I didn’t. Yet here we are.

Of course, that leaves us with what to do with the funds.

They obviously can’t be spent on what they were intended for now, so I can go ahead and issue a refund via PayPal to anybody who would like have one. You’re certainly entitled to it. It was also suggested that we could give them to Kent’s daughter, Erin, something I intend to do with what I’ve thrown into the pot. Or any other suggestions, really.

I am so very sorry to be the bearer of such horrible news and my prayers are with Kent and his family now.

May G-d grant them strength and comfort, and may he welcome our friend and brother into His Kingdom with open arms.

    Damn. Just damn it all.

    No refund desired here.

    Delftsman3 growls and barks:

With what Beth and I are going through, we know the expenses Erin is facing, and we know while that our little bit might not be much, but that every little bit helps. I certainly hope all the other donors also agree that it is best to send the whole fund to her.

Kent will be sorely missed by us all, may he find peace in Mary’s arms in the presence of G-d on his passing.

While I realize that it isn’t appropiate in this thread I hope you will forgive me if I also inform everyone as to Beth’s status.

She’s had a mini-stroke that has weakened her somewhat on her left side and has deepened her aphasia to a small degree. The docs think that they have gotten her blood infection mostly under control for the time being and are considering new options for her chemo. They have determined that her Ovarian cancer is at stage 4 and the adeno cancer is at stage 3; they are being vague as to her long term prognosis, but I fear it isn’t good, but we’ll continue to fight as hard as we can; we’re Rotties, after all !

I want to thank you all for your prayers and well wishes in this traumatic time, they really mean the world to us both. The Rotties truly are a family.

Whenever I read any of Caveman’s comments, it always struck me as the voice of clarity that cuts through all the din. The kind we need very much now more than ever. I’m grateful for Kent’s many, many sterling examples of that. My prayers to him and his family, and to Beth and hers.

I don’t need mine back, forward it to Erin.

    MikeG growls and barks:

I was not able to contribute this time so I do not feel I get a vote in what happens to the funds. I am confident, however that they will be handled appropriately. My mother in law passed away last week under similar circumstances. Doctors had given her “months” to live, and in a week she has passed. It is tempting to say that she “gave up” but upon further reflection I think it was just that she was ready to meet the Lord. Not a defeat by any means, but a victory over pain, suffering, and death which she will never feel again. So it will be with Caveman.

LC Sir Rurik, K.o.E. growls and barks:

This is not death, it is a final graduation exercise, and as we all might have expected, Kent is passing with flying colors. He is in the process of shucking off the mortal husk he no longer needs, and earthly things are no longer of concern to him, for he is sprouting his new wings and making his upward and home, eagerly looking to see his Mary.

I also agree to send the money to Erin.

i’ll miss his intellect and his great writing. First Warspite and now my brudda Cave, we’re losing all our laureates.

I’ll give something later this afternoon.

Goddamnit it all anyway (and I apologize for the blasphemy)

    LC Ogrrre growls and barks:

Kent is a good guy, and after all he has been through he deserves his reward of being with his beloved Mary once more. Most, if not all of us, here will miss his insight and wit. I have a feeling he will look after us from his vantage point, as he is such a caring soul. I hope his passing will be without pain.
Erin, I hope you follow the example of your parents. I am sure that, as loving as they were to each other and to their friends, they raised you well. I feel for you, and hope God gives you strength, hope, healing and comfort.

Delftsman3 – for what it’s worth, my sister lived for three years after stage four diagnosis of breast cancer. Her husband was her rock, her lover, her best friend and she was his. Prayers going out to the both of you.

I knew he probably wasn’t going to last long considering how his last few emails were sounding. Just add ours to what you’re sending Erin. She’s going to need it, Bless her heart. I pray that Kent goes peacefully and pain free.

Once again, I’m so very sorry that we couldn’t make this happen and, just as importantly, I want to thank all of YOU for making it even a POSSIBILITY.

    You people are awesome.

Farewell and God’s speed, Caveman. Remember us in the hereafter, and beseech the Almighty on our behalf to strengthen us as we strive to keep up the fight and remember the faith as we await our turn to go.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the last embrace of the earth welcome him home.

    How can I contribute?

When I first started lurking around this site I picked up early on Kent’s good character and strong patriotism. He kept me coming back because like most here he put into words what most of us felt, Ill truly miss him and prey he does not suffer.Soon however he will be with his wife ( Mary ) and in the presence of God and will no longer know pain but only the joy of God’s love.
