I’d say the homeowner needed more than that 9mm POS. 9mm is okay for shooting Euroweenies, but you need something in .40 or .45 cal for serious folks.
He might also have been better off using an AR-15 Personal Defense Weapon, rather than a handgun. (Want to stay away from those evil AR-15 assault weapons, though.)

I have both. My one problem is with the .45.

Of course I could always break out the “Biden.” Two rounds into the clouds, reload, then two rounds through the door. Guaranteed to get you results. (Just not the results you were looking for)

I can’t remember where I first read that. Jeff Cooper IIRC

That said though, I wouldn’t want to get shot with a Europellet – or several of them – at a rapid rate of delivery – at close range – especially if they’re modern self defense Wonderpellets.

The video shows what is apparently a common mistake. The good guy, facing a threat, grabs his gun – but he doesn’t grab a spare mag.
I believe you should always have a spare mag, no matter what gun you’re using or how many cartridges the mag holds.
All my guns that I keep loaded have at least one reload with them. I’ve mad it a habit; when I pick up the gun, I pick up the spare mag.
Pistol practice always includes shooting with a spare mag in my weak hand.

I realize the video shows Joe Suburbia, probably not a gun nut or a frequent shooter, enjoying home time with his wife and family, suddenly and unexpectedly confronted with a life or death decision, but as a wise man once said, “You fight like you train”. Having a reload on you should be an integral part of firearm self defense training.

The hallmark of a man who, though props go to him for at least having the gun, doesn’t appear to have practiced with it much.

It’s one thing to have a gun. It’s quite another to know how to use it. (And I know I didn’t have to tell you guys that, but still.)

Let’s be honest with ourselves: The average schlub is not going to be in a situation where they are going to have to decide that someone has to die. I’ve read plenty of articles from people who have protected themselves and still have nightmares from having to kill a person. I’ll give them credit for trying to be realistic in that regard.

OT – sort of but not, because it’s gun issues…

Guys, I don’t ask people to forward stuff or distribute stuff very often, but this kid’s plight absolutely breaks my heart.

Bottom line: college-bound honors student, Eagle Scout – CHARGED WITH A FELONY for accidentally leaving a shotgun in his car on school grounds. He didn’t threaten anyone, and didn’t display it. When he realized what he did, he secured it, called his mom and asked him to come get it. Someone overheard the call, and the rest is history.

There are petitions and contact numbers in the story, but here you go anyway:

Contact the Johnston County DA Susan Doyle via email Susan.I.Doyle@nccourts.org or telephone (919) 209-5521 and ask her to immediately drop the charges against Cole.

To be honest, I am not impressed with the “stopping” power of anything hand-held. You want to lay-something out, use a scatter-gun or a rifle. I’ve read far far too many police reports regarding thugs who ran off with a chest full of .45 acp or .357 magnum, and didn’t drop until they exsanguinated. Unless you split the spine or vacate the scum-ball’s head of his brain-matter, he can still run, fight, and kill for way longer than he needs.

Dying is a process in most cases – even a shooting. Fatally shooting someone is different from stopping them. Never been one to jump on the “this cartridge sucks” and this one is “the best ever” arguments. When you look at the numbers, catastrophic shot placement is the deciding factor in “immediately stopping” with handguns. Not the number of shots, not the power of the weapon.

You can “kill” him and leave him perfectly able to cause bedlam for minutes.

Dunno where I am going here. Just tossing out that there is no magical pistol cartridge or caliber that is going to compensate for putting the lead through a guy’s brain-pan, or severing his spine at the neck.

Rifles and shotguns are a different story. Even the .223 poodle shooters.

Which is consequently why the government goons want to take them from us.

My ready weapon at home is a semi-automatic Saiga .410 with a pair of 10 round magazines loaded with 3″ PDX1 rounds. Great balance of control, stopping power and reliability so Mrs. SecondMouse can handle it in my absence. Handguns are for when you are too far away from your long guns.

Never allow the playing field to be level when an adversary approaches your home. In this instance, if the homeowner had been able to walk past the window with an AR at the ready, I think the perps might have decided to vacate, even though there are other weapons with better CQB characteristics.

It just so happens that I’ve been studying terminal ballistics lately.
Rapid incapacitation depends entirely on disruption of the central nervous system. That means shot placement is everything.
Disruption of the CNS is accomplished by two means:
Direct impact on the brain or spine by a projectile, or,
Rapid loss of blood to the CNS. This means direct impact on the heart or major arteries, with sufficient damage to immediately end blood flow. People often just drop dead when shot in the heart or major arteries, though that isn’t always the case. This is also seen in game animals. Where the heart is in its beating cycle when the bullet hits is believed to be a major factor in this phenomenon.
The power of a weapon is a factor because the greater the power, the greater the area of the body affected by the projectile.
That’s why with a handgun you fire several rounds quickly to increase the chances of affecting the CNS by a direct hit or rapidly stopping blood flow.

As Clint Smith said, “A handgun is for fighting your way to the shotgun you never should have put down”.

I haven’t seen those reports. My guns & various hollow-pointed ammo haven’t either, & I suspect His Rottieness’s & his equipment also haven’t. Anyhow that can work both ways: always assume you’re gonna make it & keep fighting!

Just tossing out that there is no magical pistol cartridge or caliber that is going to compensate for putting the lead through a guy’s brain-pan, or severing his spine at the neck.

That’s an argument for keeping an ax or some other big, heavy-bladed weapon handy. In my house they’d be hanging availably on my walls.

A little vid crit: I’m no pro, but I suspect it would’ve been a little more realistic if, on hearing the initial gunfire, Creep #2 ran back to the car & took the hell off. This isn’t a tactics video. It’s a PSA. Most folks are not military trained. Most folks where Hubby has a handgun are going to be in exactly this situation. Wife and daughters going “OH NO, NO, NO, NO!” while Hubby is horrified and wetting himself.

And yes, when he squeezes that trigger he’s going to flinch and be terrified that he’s pointing a weapon at a human being. It’s quite likely he’s never heard a firearm go off outside of a range.

And no, he’s not likely to remember to grab that extra mag since his adrenaline is spiking through the roof and the closest he’s ever been to combat is playing Angry Birds at work.

WAAAYYY more people are going to identify with this man and his family than if he hand handled it like a combat vet.

After having put a goblin in a bag in the line of duty, I can tell you that killing someone…even someone who sincerely deserves to die…is a traumatic experience. Less traumatic for me than it was for him, but something you never get over. The big deal is making all the decisions BEFORE you need to carry them out. Deciding “shoot/not shoot” when some shitstain is advancing in a threatening manner is a pretty good way of becoming a chalk outline on the floor. You should ALREADY have done the mental preparation (thinking it out) and the physical preparation (range time at realistic distances) before you find yourself in that situation. I do drills with my wife…she carries her little pistol in a silly little fanny pack, and we spent a lot of hours just drawing an unloaded pistol and pointing it at a target about ten feet from her before we loaded the first round. Now she has the muscle memory to draw, keep her finger outside the trigger guard, and fire two or three shots into an area that is guaranteed to ruin some asshole’s last day on earth. All along, I’m encouraging her to visualize the real deal. Think about it beforehand; deal with it afterwards. You can only get therapy if you survive.

Yes, I know it’s a PSA. Yes, I know that the point was the 7-round limitation. Yes, I know most folks aren’t military trained (incidentally, Orion, neither am I – I tried, but the Navy wanted a flat gut & round arches, rather than the other way around).

From a tactics standpoint, though, the video is still instructive. And as Mark is saying, the mental/physical prep needs to have already been done prior to any encounter.

And this is the question of 1000 answers, all of them right given the correct situation. I’ll give it a try though.

The question is how much time are you going to spend training? Do you plan on carrying it or simply keeping it in your home? Are you OCD about keeping pocket lint out of the action? (Don”t laugh….. my uncle knew a guy who got shot cause he had enough lint around the slide of his 1911 that the slide didn’t completely close. Goblin got him while he was racking another round. Thankfully he lived, the goblin ran….. but it is a lesson I’m never forgot.)

Revolvers go bang….. every time even with some gunk. A .357 is one hell of a round. I’ll take it over a .45ACP any day of the week. The down side is revolvers are heavy, limited capacity and they are a bitch to reload. Oh yeah…… they are also harder to shoot than an auto, at least for me.

Now if you are gonna carry the thing, and are willing to put in the practice time, I would suggest one of the poly frame autos. Probably either a S&W M&P or a Glock. (My preference is the Smith) The M&P Compact will give you 13 rounds of 9mm, in a light weight highly concealable package. If you are not gonna carry it, well get a Mossburg.

There are tons of great choices out there though. I’m sure others will steer you in a different direction.

  34. 34

Where to start? SRGK said many good things, and the next question after how much practice are you willing to put in is how much money do you want to spend? Weapon, support gear, concealed or not, and with that comes “just how big a boy/girl are ya?” This pretty muchgoes for everyone, not just you. Many of us are old timers, ex-military, from miscellaneous countries, which have varied training styles, so the very simplest thing to start with would be … crap. How much practice, how much money, how … Easiest thing in the world is going to be a 4-6″ double action revolver in .357. Why? Easier/cheaper to train with .38 Special. Doesn’t go bang? Pull the trigger again. When the SHTF, you’re not going to notice the difference in the cartridge so train warm, carry HOT. The europellet 9mm isn’t bad with good HPs. Springfield XDs are good if you want a simple auto instead. Me? 1911 Commander in .45 @ 4 o’clock IWB. Or my tiny little XDs. A .45 smaller than a lot of mouseguns. But I’ve been carrying a pistol for 40 years, and I’ve got my druthers. We would have to meet at a gunshop/range with a day or two to play and lots of money to spend on test ammo until we found what fits. New or used? It goes on for days.

Actually, the shooting in the video is quite a bit better than what really happens in the real world, even among “well trained professionals” like the police (snicker). I’ve read of cops having to reload before hitting the bad guy once, like the cop in LA that emptied two 18 rounds mags and hit the bg twice-from 8 feet away-and neither hit was in a critical area. In most self defense shootings less than half the shots fired are hits.
Pulling the trigger until the gun runs dry isn’t unusual when you’re shitting yourself with fear, especially if you don’t train frequently and realistically. Also, there’s the adage that you should shoot til the bg stops moving. It may take six rounds and if you only have seven and there’s more than one bg you’re screwed without a spare mag in your hand. You fight like you train and most people “train” like the guy in the video; standing erect on a firing line, isosceles stance, shoot till the slide locks back, pick up their other magazine off the table and do it again.

Um, what is this”clip” thingy you mention? Pistols don’t use clips.

People have noticed the asshattery of which you speak and have stepped in to ameliorate what can only be described as injustice perpetrated by the panty wetting fear of the ignorant. How often are we told of the nuance and intelligence of our progressive betters only to have them wield zero tolerance policies which have all the nuance an intelligence of a slab of granite.

Dead center with a .45 and not even the most hopped up Angel Dust snorting goblin is going to get up after two to the chest and one to the head so, though I do recommend high cap mags, practice makes perfect.

Plus the father obliviously didn’t have much range time with the weapon. Shooting must be a natural reflex just like driving a car or taking a shit and that only comes with practice, practice, practice. Plus spare mags are a MUST and grabbing them is just as important as grabbing the weapon itself. And reloading drills are a given…everyday.

A little history lesson. When WWII started the Marine Corps was still using the 1903 Springfield that held only five rounds. The Japanese quickly figured (on the ‘Canal) out that if they waited until a Marine fired five shots they could jump out and pick them off while they reloaded. Many a Leatherneck died while reloading that rifle. In 1943 the Corps began issuing the M1 Grand but the Emperors Little Minions didn’t realize it until 1944. The Marines figured out that if they fired five rounds and then waited the Japs would come out of hiding to try and get them. The Grand held eight rounds. Those three rounds plus the Marine Corps masochistic dedication to marksmanship proved to be the edge that let the Marine Corps prevail.

Bottom line…extra rounds are nice but first round hits are what will save your sorry ass in the end.

first thing I would suggest is find a range with loaners. find what fits your hand best. then practice.

Hey Rotties help your fellow rightwing death beast choose my first handgun. I own a 30-06 but have never had a handgun. I did serve in the army but my firearm knowledge is severely lacking

My older brother has a S&W 686. I have been very impressed by what he can do with it. It holds 7 cartridges, and can shoot .357 or .38 special. You squeeze, it goes bang, and it will do so till your kids die of old age.

I am a Glock man myself, with several of the different .9mm models either on me or in my briefcase – or both. The nephew likes the Springfield XD’s and caries a sub-compact.

You gotta see what fits your hand. Try a bunch. If it’s by a quality maker, the weapon will be good, (S&W, Glock, Sig Sauer, etc, etc), it should be up to the challenge – but you need to find the one that fits you.

    It’s like getting hiking shoes.

    For DJ.

There was a old bull and a young bull standing on a hillside overlooking a herd of cows. The young bull says to the old bull “hey pops, let’s run down there and fuck one of those cows”. The old bull responded “no son, let’s WALK down there and fuck em all”.

What’s the adage about the treachery of the old….

I remember this joke from about fifty years ago when my dad told it to me. Try this one:

A man escapes from prison where he has been for the past 15 years. He breaks into a house to look for money and guns and finds a young couple in bed. He orders the guy out of bed and ties him to a chair and then whilst tying the girl to the bed he gets on top of her, kisses her neck, then gets up and goes into the bathroom.

While he’s in there, the husband tells his wife, “Listen, this guy is an escaped convict, look at his clothes! He probably spent lots of time in jail and hasn’t seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck.” If he wants sex, don’t resist, don’t complain, do whatever he tells you. Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. This guy is probably very dangerous. If he gets angry, he’ll kill us. Be strong, honey. I love you.”

To which his wife responds, “He wasn’t kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, that he thought you were cute and he asked me if we had any Vaseline. I told him it was in the bathroom. Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. Be strong honey, I love you too!!”

Reminds me of one my father told me decades and decades and decades ago when I was still into cracking my teeth out in the bar scene….

“Never start a brawl with a man too old to fight boy. ‘Cause he’ll just kill ya.”

    - Said to me after getting beaten near to death by an old fella 3x my age one night. Pool stick you don’t see coming > speed, strength, and…

Yup. We are too old to go round and round like that. Much more expedient to kill ya and get it over with.

I used to LOVE bar fights. Shit, I LIVED for a good brawl. I didn’t even drink that much — I didn’t need to — I could get worked up into a brawl just because it was FUN.

Not so much now. I am still a pretty big guy, just not as invincible as I once was. But I still can kill you with my bare hands in less than a minute if I wanted to thanks to Krav Maga, and if I really needed to, I would just shoot you.

It is probably a good thing I don’t go into bars any more… :em03:
