The Silver Lining To the Approaching Thunderstorm

The statists are in full bore tyrant mode with state legislators proposing everything from warrant-less house checks on future to be registered “assault weapons” owners, to preventing free speech anonymity.  But there is a sliver lining to it all. A couple actually.

Back in ’94 during the debate on the “assault weapons” ban, the left and the media (I repeat myself) framed the debate and it was centered on “sporting purposes” bullshit. The truth about the 2nd Amendment wasn’t widely repeated and our fellow citizens remained ignorant of it’s true intent. Now, thanks to Algore’s wondrous interwebtubies, that is not the case. People who had never before thought about it are being exposed to the original intent of not only the 2nd, but the whole Constitution. People are waking up and the legacy media have lost their propagandist monopoly on the debate.

Additionally, like in ’94, millions of people who were unarmed before are now arming themselves. As an example, I was at my range today with a student (first time gun owner) and after we were done I stayed behind to drool over what was left in the cases and shoot the shit with the staff. I watched a very diminutive lady in her late 50′s to early 60′s pick up two new pistols.  She was smartly dressed and very classy, in no way the stereotypical frothing mad gun owner the media would prefer to betray. She was obviously a first time gun owner. Her, and the millions like her who have armed themselves since the latest round of statist power grabs started, are not going to go away. If the gun bans are defeated they are not going to sell their guns and go “Whew, that’s a relief.”

If we can avoid the coming thunderstorm and somehow manage to reverse the tyrannical aspirations of the socialist pricks, there will be a whole new segment of our society who have been exposed to the shooting world and no longer believe the lies foisted on them about their fellow citizens who own guns.

If…

    Such optimism.

    1. They reach too far with an out and out gun grab; or

    2. They crater the economy with the spending problem they don’t have, and the Free Shit Army riots; or

I don’t really see a third option here.

While I’m not a first time gun owner, It has been a very long time since I actually fired my guns. In fact, through negligence on my part, my Mini-14′s bolt seized up so badly it wasn’t worth paying to have it repaired. (Rifle was 20 years old and bought used)

So, I traded it for a store credit and purchased a brand spanking new CMMG AR-15. (Bought a couple of weeks before the recent run so I got a great deal) I also bought cleaning materials and started taking training classes. Since January, I have:

    1. Taken and passed the NRA Basic handgun course
    2. Taken a a course called the Practical Handgun Clinic where I learned the basics of handling my Beretta 92
    3. Purchased flip up sights for my new rifle.
    4. purchased a mount for the 9x power scope the dealer threw in. (Mounted it yesterday
    5. Purchased a total of 14 30rd magazines for my new EBR
    6. bookmarked a number of YouTube videos showing me the correct way to care for my AR, Beretta and Ruger 10/22
    7. purchased a box of 9MM JHP for home defense and one box of 124 grain FMJ
8.gained a membership in a range called the Manchester Firing Line.
    9. Have located a new gun store a couple of miles from my home that is in the process of constructing their own range. (Will sign up with them when completed)
    10. Managed to locate and order 200rds of 5.56 (All I could get
    11. Am looking into more training classes as time permits with the goal of a new handgun, (or two), and a CCW permit.

A good friend manages a large gun shop in an Unnamed Western State. Ever since the Reanointment of Teh One, I’ve been hearing reports of lines around the block and getting deliveries of guns/ammo/parts in drips and drabs despite being a major stocking dealer. Since the mask has slipped, another order of magnitude has been added to demand.

Gun shows where they sold a hundred guns have turned into sellouts of 500 or more. NICS checks have gone from minutes to hours in some cases. People are clamoring for anything that shoots and even the humble 91 Mosin is in short supply.

And as Sir Crunchie points out, all those guns aren’t going away. They’ve created one of their worst nightmares: An America not only armed to the teeth, but clamoring for more guns.

All those guns come with a meme. When someone is well-armed and trained, they begin asking dangerous questions. They begin to wonder if the Almighty State isn’t really as powerful or essential as they were taught back in elementary school. Some of them even begin to embrace a certain sense of empowerment and individualism.

This is what scares them shitless. They’re in a panic, even worse than that among gun owners. A well-armed populace is not only difficult to cow, they’re apt to begin sneering at the idea that an expansive government is necessary. All those decades of careful indoctrination, down the tubes for the price of a Ruger 10/22.

The Good Colonel said it long ago, “Pick up a rifle and you instantly change from a subject to a citizen.”

We just had a fun surprise here in Oregon. Two days ago, our festering boil on the ass of freedom, Ginny Burdick, announced that she and her feckless fucktard friends were dropping the assault weapons ban that she introduces every year, admitting it really had no chance. It seemed that the real move now was tighten the screws on CHL requirements and restrict where we could carry. I guess when thousands of Oregonians, myself included, got all uppity by holding armed rallies at the capitol, that it was time we were put in our place.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/mapes/index.ssf/2013/02/oregon_lawmakers_drop_attempt.html

Now, today, we hear that she is a cosponsor on yet another bill even worse than some of the other anti-gun dumbfuckery that has seized the nation. The new bill, introduced in the House this time, would come with the same ban as other states are pushing, similar to what Kalifornistan has, but would magnanimously allow us to register and keep ONE assault weapon, and THREE magazines.

    Linky

So, tomorrow, I have to burn yet more liquid dinosaurs driving down to the capitol, this time armed with TWO “assault weapons” (because fuck you, Ginny) just to remind them that we are still displeased.

Easily 25 percent of the tech support phone calls and emails I handle are people like you described, Crunch. First time gun owners wanting advice on choosing a home defense gun. And most are surprised when I try to gently steer them from a high-dollar handgun that they’ll never become proficient with or carry, to an inexpensive, imported 12 gauge pump-action shotgun.

They aren’t gun nuts, they don’t even want to shoot their new gun, for the most part. But they want the security of having one in their homes.

Anticipation of recoil, pushing the gun down against muzzle rise. Press trigger smoothly while concentrating on sight picture, let shot surprise you. Have a friend load some dummy rounds in mag so you don’t know whether gun will fire or not, when gun goes click instead of bang you’ll see the pistol move even though it didn’t recoil.

Anticipation of recoil, pushing the gun down against muzzle rise

I haven’t had the time to get back to the range. Someone told me to try altering my grip which I will try.

When I took the clinic a month ago, I had some ammo left over and decided to fire it off very carefully. I made sure that I was aiming at one spot, slowly took up the trigger and made sure I wasn’t wavering. Three shots later and it was still low and left. However, the group was extremely tight, almost all in the same hole.
    :em01:

How much trigger finger are you putting on the trigger? A lot of times consistent groups to the left are an indication of too much trigger finger. Ideally on semi-autos the trigger should rest on the center of the first pad of your trigger finger. If you’re nestling it in the joint you’re putting too much finger which has a tendency to push the gun to the left.

Quick little update. I managed to get to the range today. I brought my 9mm and I rented a Kimber .45 commander model.

Accuracy problem has been resolved. 50 rnds .45 in a space the size of my palm, (Target at 20 feet) 100 rnds 115 grain 9mm, same range, not as good as the .45 but much improved. 50 rnds 124 grain 9mm and I was much better. I also studiously checked my grip. I made sure my right thumb was not pointing down as has been my tendency. When it was, I was pulling down and left.

And the .223 arrived just before I left. Rifle stayed home though. I wasn’t ready.

And why did someone bring a .300 rifle? Even through the ear protection it rung my bell. The range master came in and said “When I feel the earth shaking from the other range, I need to see what is going on. :em05:

    @ angry.

Kimbers are fine products, but instead of looking at “brands” I respectfully submit you may be better served by choosing by “fit.” Some handguns (especially) will fit you differently. The better the fit the better the shot. Also you may want to test your correctnetion method re the 45 by firing it from a bench. I’ve seen the low and to the left shot due to grip, bad trigger finger placement, and (believe this or not) from students dipping the muzzle at point of break so they could see the impact of the round. Keep in mind that your handgun sights should be in visual focus and the target just out of focus. Stay with your sights all the way through the sights. This will also greatly assist in second shot delivery. BTW, is that range near the airport? I used to shoot at at a range in manchester. Used to rent the MP5 and use it to “motivate” females that had never full auto’d….ah goodtimes…turns out …full auto weapons….can help one get laid……

I was only naming the Kimber because that was what I rented. Just striving to be accurate.
As to my low and left problem, it does appear it was my grip. I had someone give me a few pointers a while back and this was the first opportunity I had to put them into practice. I used both the .45 and my own Beretta. (The one I had that was shooting low and left)
I can’t post the pictures I took here, but my shooting very definitely improved. On a standard 12×12 bulls eye target, a few flyers as I got used to the .45 and then I punched out the center of the target. With my 9MM, the groups weren’t quite as tight, but the low and left issues was not present.

In any case, if it were a real bad guy bent on doing my wonderful wife harm…well, let’s just say that he wouldn’t have to worry about Obamacare.
