An Open Thread for LC Gladiator.

Okay, so the rest of The Management™ is either at a convention I wasn’t invited to, or they are out having their hair and nails done.

So, in the interest of providing some new material here, (and to let LC Gladiator have a whole new thread with his name on it) I thought it would be nice to post something new.

So get busy and bark.

Resistance to Tyranny is a big book. Takes a while to read it. Seem to recall it was on a few of their reading lists.

Though if we don’t hear from them in a couple of days, I might actually consider taking an unannounced vacation for a bit myself. Always wanted to go ice-fishing in Alaska. Or maybe Florida. Or perhaps Oregon. Hell, I hear Texas has some good fishing holes too. Course, I’ve never been up to the boundary-waters this time of year either. Do some snow-shoeing.

Speaking of going Galt – here’s a wild story from The Smithsonian, by way of The Belmont Club:

The Smithsonian Magazine relates how of a “lost” tribe of Christians was found in the Siberian taiga in the late ’70s. It’s true the tribe consisted of only a single family who had cut themselves off from human contact for 40 years but their attempt, though small was grand. They had not even been aware that World War 2 had been fought. It was led by a patriarch who consciously decided to live away atheist bolshevism by retreating into the deepest corner of Siberia.

They did not resist or offer unpleasantness when a team of Russian geologists found them who were astounded by the story

Slowly, over several visits, the full story of the family emerged. The old man’s name was Karp Lykov, and he was an Old Believer—a member of a fundamentalist Russian Orthodox sect, worshiping in a style unchanged since the 17th century. Old Believers had been persecuted since the days of Peter the Great, and Lykov talked about it as though it had happened only yesterday; for him, Peter was a personal enemy and “the anti-Christ in human form”—a point he insisted had been amply proved by Tsar’s campaign to modernize Russia by forcibly “chopping off the beards of Christians.” But these centuries-old hatreds were conflated with more recent grievances; Karp was prone to complain in the same breath about a merchant who had refused to make a gift of 26 poods [940 pounds] of potatoes to the Old Believers sometime around 1900.

Things had only got worse for the Lykov family when the atheist Bolsheviks took power. Under the Soviets, isolated Old Believer communities that had fled to Siberia to escape persecution began to retreat ever further from civilization. During the purges of the 1930s, with Christianity itself under assault, a Communist patrol had shot Lykov’s brother on the outskirts of their village while Lykov knelt working beside him. He had responded by scooping up his family and bolting into forest.

I’m a firm believer in “to each his own” and “live and let live” when it comes to people’s musical taste (except rap, which isn’t music. I won’t tolerate it-ever). And I understand that some people strongly dislike the music I enjoy and think it’s total crap. But I am truly perplexed by people who choose to smear sonic shit like that on themselves and the people around them. Even when I was “young and rebellious” (I can’t help but giggle when I type that. There are none so conformist as the “young and rebellious”) and someone would play metal I thought, “Why do you hate your ears?”. I recently worked with a guy who loved Metallica and listened to it on his phone while he worked. The feeling of relief when his battery finally ran down was sweet.

In other news you woun’t hear about. China is getting ready to take over the the strategic port of Gwadar in Pakistan. Access to the Arabian sea through Baluchistan was one of the Soviet Union’s long-term goals for its incursion into Afghanistan in 1979. The Chinese are ensconced iat the Panama Canal, in Latin America, and various spots in Africa. What could possibly go wrong? :em03:

And in other notation. Today is the seventieth anniversary of the surrender of the German Sixth Army in Stalingrad. There were earlier reversals, and much greater defeats later, but Stalingrad was their high-water mark.

According to a new Pew Research poll, Americans are increasingly worried about the federal government violating their rights. The survey, conducted January 9-13, showed that 53 percent of Americans believe that the federal government “threatens their own personal rights and freedoms,” with 43 percent disagreeing. That is a significant uptick from March 2010, when just 47 percent said that the government threatened their freedom, with 50 percent disagreeing.

According to a new Pew Research poll, Americans are increasingly worried about the federal government violating their rights.

You could have taken that poll at ANY prior week going back to 1787 and gotten similar results. The mere discussion of things tends to whip up fear and discern. When it comes to actual curtailment of rights, the Court has been consistently the villain over the years by whittling down our rights across the board with “exceptions” and “explanation” of things like the 1st, 2nd, and 4th amendments.

Then, as we ALL know, we had a Congress bending to fear, come up with the Patriot Act and the Son of the Patriot Act that has implications that threaten our Bill of Rights that we still don’t know the depths of. Every move you make in public, every word you type here or speak there is recorded and sifted through. If you are out in the open, somewhere, the chances are greater than not that you are on at least one camera at all times. Even if you are inside somewhere, you are likely being watched.

The government uses the threat of “terrorism” as an excuse for the incursion into your privacy, and we are supposed to trust that the government is not going to misuse its new-found capabilities to keep an eye and ear on us. The Court backs the government up on this by saying we don’t really have an enumerated “right” to privacy. We also don’t have an enumerated “right” to vote, either, according to the Court.

    LC Gladiator says:

IF you are a smoker who voted for Obama:

This was coming with or without Obamacare.

Why should I, as a non-smoker, have to pay for YOUR health care because you make bad choices in your life and end up driving up the cost of health care?

By this time, you HAVE to know how insurance works — or at least I hope you do. Because we cannot afford to pay for our health care out of our pockets, we pool our money together to pay for those who need health care right now. We expect that when our turn comes and we need health care, that the pool of money will pay for our care as well.

The problem is, that those with riskier behaviors — such as smoking, drinking, and over-eating — tend to have far more serious (and expensive) treatment needs than those who don’t have those bad behaviors. So the people who tend to take better care of themselves are literally subsidizing the bad behaviors of those who end up becoming a financial drain on the system. So one of two things has to happen: either you charge those with bad behaviors more in premiums, or you charge EVERYONE more in premiums.

It isn’t fair to charge everyone for the behaviors of a few. You don’t want to pay for contraception — I don’t want to pay for your smoking.

If you don’t think there is a correlation between smoking and health costs, you probably should check with your local jails and prison system. In the jails and prisons that have cut out smoking, health costs have dropped by almost 40 percent over a ten year period. This is direct costs, not effects of “second-hand smoke” issues.

Insurance companies don’t have a problem raising the rates on everybody to cover their costs and increase their profits. Obamacare makes it harder for them to just raise their rates across the board for the actions of a few, so they will now just go after those who have risky behaviors.

I know, it sounds as if the government is telling you how you should eat, or not smoke, or drink — and to some extent they are. But it isn’t for the GOVERNMENT’S benefit, it is for everyone’s benefit who have to pay for that behavior.

Go ahead and smoke your heart out. Do permanent damage to your lungs that you can never recover from. But expect to pay more for your choice and don’t expect me to help carry the weight of your decisions.

I am certainly not telling you that you should quit smoking/drinking/eating or whatever else it is you do — those are YOUR choices in life and we all should be allowed to make our own choices. Hell, I say we make ALL drugs legal, and if you want to become a heroin addict — mazel tov! As long as you don’t become a burden to me and everyone else, then have at it. Don’t expect me to be there to pick up the pieces. Pay for the disposal of your carcass up front, is all I ask.

I don’t think you can get any more Conservative than that. Pay to play.

I am all about freedom. Freedom of religion, freedom FROM religion. Freedom of speech, freedom from having to listen to that speech. Freedom to strap up with guns, and freedom from being shot by one of your stray bullets. Freedom to smoke, drink, and stuff your neck full of MSG and saturated fats, and freedom from me having to pay for your indulgences.

Just don’t get your chocolate in my peanut butter.

So I am more than alright with smokers having to pay more than me on health insurance.

DVD rentals, or streaming; or to buy.

They do have movies up to ca. 1970, but 1960 is really their benchmark. It’s like stepping into a different world. Patriotism is the default attitude; women are ladies or shady ladies, bad guys get their comeuppance, and the White Hats win the day!

And they have a gross ton of old pre-1960s television shows (that’s the stuff Netflix really doesn’t carry much of). Actually, Netflix, although it has the famous old movies, has some surprising holes in its movie lineup pre-1960. And they don’t have nearly this much in the TV roster from that era.

Cheerio, and enjoy the game tomorrow!

I don’t expect them to be silent over Chris Kyle’s death – I expect them to use this event to push their gun control agenda. It is important that all these men be remembered for the right reasons.

Chris Kyle co-founded the FITCO Cares Foundation to address PTSD in our returning soldiers. They are honoring him on their site; go here to read, and to leave a comment on their home page, if so inspired.

The administration has only themselves to blame Irish. In deliberately orchestrating a Mexican bloodbath, in a purposeful attempt to gin up an outcry for a gun-control push, and then getting caught in the act, they opened themselves up to this sort of suspicion.

They proved themselves to be entirely untrustworthy, murdering, backstabbing, plotting liars, and now people will look with a jaundiced eye in .gov’s direction after every tragedy that happens. King Obama and his goons were too smart by half, and they brought this on themselves. Had they not decided to paint a false narrative in the blood and innards of 200+ Mexican citizens, (and let’s not forget Brian terry), they’d not have left themselves open to accusations, suspicions, and paranoia fuel.

Then you get shit like Benghazi, where the Obama administration again found themselves neck deep in rubbish, and concluded the most expedient manner in which to clean up the mess was using American bodies like a Brillo pad.

When you’re an ice-water veined Alinsky-ite, with a confirmed 200+ kills, and a supplicant media who’s more than happy to run with every single horrible tragedy that crops up… well… you got nobody to blame but yourself when people in the opposition start to get downright paranoid.

Let’s face it: When you’re standing on as many corpses as president Drone Kill, damn near anything is on the table.

That’s what happens when your government wages open warfare on your way of life – and has no zero problems killing people to get their way.

What the hell, I’ll jump into that can of worms.
    .30-06
The only advantage the .308 has is that it fits into a short action. It supposedly has more “inherent accuracy” but I haven’t seen it.
You get more velocity in the ’06 than the .308 with the same bullets which gives the ’06 a flatter trajectory.

Interesting… I was told to go .308 by a friend of mine… You gave me more food for thought.

  72. 72
    single stack growls and barks:

    LC Xealot @ #: 71

Supposedly the .308 is more accurate than the ’06 but I disagree. In my experience they generally show about the same level of accuracy with carefully selected loads.
My Rem 700 with my handloads, (I’ve never fired a factory round through it) which are the Sierra 168 gr HPBT Match at 2650 fps ( my match load) and Hornady 165 gr SP at 2650 fps (my hunting load) consistently shoots 5 shot groups of 2 – 2 1/2″ at 300 yards with both loads. I frequently shoot sub 2″ groups and occasionally I manage to squeeze out a sub 1″ group. My best ever group was shot with the Hornady load when I put 5 rounds into a hole 5/8″ in its widest dimension at 300 yards.
Oddly enough, with both loads the rifle shoots 2″ groups at 100 yards, 2″ groups at 200 yards, and 2″ groups at 300 yards. I stopped at 300 yards because that’s the max distance at our club range. A friend just bought some property where I can stretch out as far as 900 yards so I’ll soon begin seeing what Olivia is really capable of.
I know this level of accuracy is phenomenal and as you might have guessed, she isn’t an out-of-the-box rifle. She is a Rem 700 long action, originally an ADL that I converted to BDL. The barrel is a 24″ Shilen chromoly 5 1/2 contour and the action is blueprinted. Barrel installation and blueprinting by Aquila Precision of LaPorte, Texas. I did all the rest of the work myself.
She sits in a HS Precision Police Sniper stock with an aluminum bedding block. The action is glass bedded and the barrel free floated. Action screws are tightened with a torque wrench. The barrel channel is relieved for a #8 contour barrel, which allows airflow around the barrel. The trigger is a Jewel HVR set at 1 1/2 lbs. I installed a Tubb Speedlock firing pin with a Wolff extra power spring.
Glass is a Burris Black Diamond 4x16x50 with ballistic mil dot reticle.
The key to the amazing accuracy I’m able to get is weigh sorting my bullets. When I first developed my loads the accuracy was pretty good but nothing exceptional. When I bought a digital scale and sorted the bullets by weight the groups shrank to the numbers I’m able to brag about here.
While the gun is exceptional it illustrates the kind of accuracy the .30-06 is capable of.

WHAT THE FUCK ??? Chris Kyle gets gunned down and everyone is asleep ??

Gee, if only he hadn’t been in a “gun free zone”….

    Oh wait.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but, the argument that having a gun available is being stood directly on its ear in this story. Here you have the quintessential gun expert who happens to be armed, is gunned down by some idiot with a gun — IN A GUN RANGE. Not too long ago someone from this site tried to tell me that these kinds of thing DON’T happen in a gun range.

Guess what, they do, and MOST of the time, the person who has the draw has the advantage — and usually is is the goblin who has the draw.

It is a sad thing that Chris Kyle became a murder victim. but his death only illustrates the REAL problem we face in this nation — the wrong people are in possession of firearms.

I am going to say this one more time here. “Gun Control” isn’t about banning certain types of guns, it is about making sure guns don’t end up in the hands of people who are liable to cause problems with those guns.

I am completely through hearing the excuse put out by Wayne LaPierre that because criminals don’t pay attention to gun control laws that there shouldn’t be any reason for implementing or enforcing current gun control laws.

ARREST CRIMINALS WHO POSSESS GUNS! Enforce the current federal laws that mandate a ten year minimum for ex-felons in mere possession of firearmes, and a consecutive mandatory minimum of any crime where a firearm is involved. Take it one step further and mandate a mandatory minimum of thirty years consecutive sentence on ANY crime where a firearm (or threat of a firearm) is used.

Fuck a “ban” on specific firearms. That might sound good to some people, but is completely ineffective when practiced in real life. Just make the crimes that involve firearms soooooo draconian that you either lock those people away forever and a day, or we make people think hard enough ahead of time that it isn’t worth the consequences if they are caught with a gun.

We have a problem right now because we haven’t proven our resolve in enforcing our current gun laws. Most prosecutors only use the federal felon in possession of firearm charges as a means to plea bargain for a lesser charge. This has to end. EVERYONE who is caught as a felon in possession NEEDS to be charged and convicted., Otherwise there is no actual deterrent involved — and the criminals know it.

For ME, “gun control” means to deal with the REAL problem we face: The wrong people having guns. We DO need to have a universal background check to make sure that guns don’t get into the wrong hands. This means shutting down the private sales exemptions (commonly referred to as the gun show loopholes that most states currently have).

I also believe that the US Constitution Second Amendment does NOT restrict requirements that insist on background checks, and gun registration. It ONLY says that the “right” to bear arms shall not be infringed. The two are NOT exclusive….

The goal here is a good hunting rifle, maybe for Deer and such… but also a good SHTF long-range rifle, as well. Cost is a factor — I’m not wealthy, but I’m not broke either. Cost meaning both the gun and the ammo. Now, I’ve never fired a high-power rifle before, so that’s a factor too. I have an AK, and I’ve fired that some (although with ammo the way it is, I’ve been hoarding lately). I’ve fired off plenty of slugs in my 12 gauge too… but nothing in the full power rifle range. So if one gun/ammo combination is a substantially easier shoot, there’s something to that too. I’m just treading into very unfamiliar territory for me, so wanted to get as many opinions as possible on the subject before I buy. Even then I figure I’m going to wait until prices and stock stabilize before buying.

Besides taking the opportunity to brag about my baby :em01: I wanted to show that the .30-06 can be extremely accurate. A lot of people claim it can’t hang with the .308 in the accuracy department, and that’s just nonsense.
Xealot can’t go wrong with either caliber. Out to 250 yards they’re pretty much equal but when the range gets longer the ’06 starts to pull away and has a clear advantage.
When I got my chronograph (CED Millenium II) I did (and still do) a lot of experimenting. I let just about anyone who wants to shoot over it. It’s seen many rounds of a wide variety of calibers from dozens of rifles and pistols.
One thing that stands out is that published velocity data is useless. It’s never even close to reality, either with factory ammo or handloads.
The difference between .308 and .30-06 velocities with the same weight bullets is generally about 200 fps, though some loads are a little closer and some are even further apart.
As far as 5.56 chambers being more accurate than .223 chambers…well, that’s not so cut and dried. It depends largely on which 5.56 chamber you have.

Either caliber should serve you well. Whatever you get, it doesn’t have to have the kind of accuracy my custom rifle has to be effective. For me, accuracy was a quest I pursued over many years. That level of accuracy is really quite useless in the real world.
Any of the rifles cmblake recommended, as well as others, are good, medium grade guns that have taken a lot of game over the years and made their owners very happy.
30-06 ammo does tend to cost more than .308, and the recoil is a little stouter due to the higher velocity. The tradeoff is a flatter trajectory at long range. However, since it’s no longer a common military caliber, it’s easier to find during panics such as we’re experiencing now.

Report: White House set to cut nuclear arsenal by one-third
By Carlo Muñoz – 02/08/13 12:41 PM ET

President Obama is poised to sign off on a new internal review of U.S. nuclear weapons strategy that would reduce the arsenal by one-third, resulting in billions in savings to the Pentagon and Energy Department.

The recommended reductions were included in a draft version of a classified decision directive compiled by top defense and national security officials inside the White House, according to a report by the Center for Public Integrity issued Friday.

While the president has yet to officially approve the directive, including the recommended one-third cut to the nuclear arsenal, sources tell CPI Obama has voiced no objection to the directive’s findings.

Representatives from State Department, Strategic Command, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the office of Vice President Biden also played a part in drafting the directive.

White House officials had pushed to get the new directive finalized late last year, according to the CPI report. However, the administration pushed back against that plan.

Political advisers inside the White House did not want the directive released publicly — especially the information on the reductions — prior to President Obama’s reelection bid last November, sources told CPI.
