In the months of campaign that unfolded after Mitt Romney was skewered for saying that “47 percent” of the country “believe that they are victims… believe the government has a responsibility to care for them,” President Obama was relatively silent about the remarks. But today, during his second inaugural speech, Obama got the last word in on the issue. He took the opportunity to push back on the idea that there are “takers” in America, and to stand up for the social safety net:
“We do not believe that in this country, freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few. We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us, at any time, may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other – through Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security – these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great.”
The argument over the role of the social safety net is far from over, even without the accompanying campaign. In March, Congress will hit a deadline over the new fiscal cliff — a set of automatic spending cuts to both defense and social programs. During that fight, Congressional Republicans will once again attempt to push all spending cuts onto social programs — particularly in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Obama’s argument that these programs “do not make us a nation of takers” lays the groundwork for him to clash with Republicans over the sequester, which will otherwise decimate those programs.
This is evidence that there is something to that evolution notion. And some have not advanced far above the roots. LC cmblake6, Imperial Black Ops Technician recently posted..Hitlerjugend-Obamajugend
A long time ago a homo sapn/neanderthal ‘hybrid’ leader gave speech about having a dream, now we fellow patriots are living in a freaking friggin NIGHTMARE!!! God help us all.~an avowed unapologetic atheist!
Coming soon: Obama Hellcare, the 21st-century version of LOGAN’S RUN. (see movie of that name, 1976)
“Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival.
“There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves.”
A long time ago a homo sapn/neanderthal ‘hybrid’ leader gave speech about having a dream…
Dunno what “homo sapn/neanderthal ‘hybrid’” means in this context, bearing in mind that the neanderthalis variety appears to be an early-model caucasian.
Tallulah, I concur.
I have felt great sadness looking at my eighty-three year old mother and eighty-five year old mother-in-law. Both fans of obama.
My mother brecame noticeably silent after I ran a few stats by her, essentially in the end she will be offered assisted suicide or or pain killers she might need. She has had three heart attacks. Do you know where half a trillion for deathcare came from? Your medicare.
For example. Were I to learn I had a bad cancer, say small cell lung, I would refuse to come to the oncologists office, knowing what was to be. The usual tactic, refusing to divulge what they have learned except in person.
We no longer discuss politics any more, she never contests my numbers, having long ago learned……you get the picture. Generally speaking, I do not share publicly what I have learned or known in my gut for some time. Even here I don’t.
Many people became visibly upset when I told them in my view I am doomed medically, being sixty. My greatest fear was that my wife could have been triaged out early, the cost judged too much. If so, I would be presently serving a life sentence for murder, after killing the bureaucrat making that dscision. In the future the protracted treatments will not be generally available, or you die awaiting treatment, perhaps simply too far advanced now, pronounced terminal and sent home to die, along with the pain pills of course.
I learned a great deal about our medical system during the last three years, a very great deal.
And unless I had a kind friend with an MD after his name and a caduceus on his door, I would be facing certain difficulties. Even that a symbol I have been told is historically inaccurate.
Nevertheless, I have taken steps into my own hands. I possess numerous, assorted medical kits, and medications here at home, of all sorts, legally, at no small expense either. I have taken to learning as much as possible as rapidly as I can. Some locals here work as nurses, nurse practicioners and one precious doctor.
I have told them the pharmacies will be the first places looted, and not for antibiotics.
The office manager for my doctor is one of my closest friends, her advice worth beyond calculation.
I have already helped some people unable to help themselves.
I have tried to imagine a country with tens of millions of addicts suddenly denied what they crave, going completely homicidal in their desperation. Drug peddlers now in charge, at any price, leading to massive crime. Or the estimated twenty million or so dependent on psychotropic medications.
And do you need some insulin?
I have studied statistics from the past regarding mortality, especially child mortality, regarding names such as typhoid, diptheria, tentanus, bacterial pneumonia, polio, tuberculosis, cholera, malaria, killer flu, mumps, measles, chicken pox, small pox, once household words. And often expected visitors, explaining the distant relatives I never got to meet……for almost half never made it past the age of five. My grandfather, born in the late eighteen hundreds, told me many a story of his childhood.
And no antibiotics…..much less antivirals.
As you know, my wife in her final days had industrial strength pain killers prescribed. I only used a small portion, the rest legally mine according to the law. The most powerful of my assortment of such medications, saving prescriptions I do not use, stored in a cool, dark environment.
Try dealing with a massive tooth infection without help available.
It may come in handy one day….truly a prize.
One statement I can make with absolute honestly. At Stanford I met hundreds of doctors, nurses, practicioners, specialists……and not one supported deathcare. Not one. Some quietly told me they hated it, most displayed fear and uncertainty.
Many have told me my views seem harsh.
I have offered to loan them a well worn pair of shoes…….

I think the new ‘do is a perfect complement to her enormous ass.
Those teeth remind me of the cow catcher on an old steam locomotive. She should have those choppers bonded…
…or Bondo’ed.
So much for trying: attempted to add an External Smilie: a Dalek screaming “EXTERMINATE!!!”
Of course nobody found it funny – the line is “I’m Rick James, Bitch.”
But in this case, should have gone with “I’m Rick James’ Bitch.”
LC Gregory says:
Fixed it when I reposted it on FB. . .
Of course, the CORRECT usage is : I’m RICK JAMES, Bitch !!!
