HA, love that pic, it always makes me laugh.

warily optimistic that this coming year will be better than the one just passed….still got lots of estate shit to do in Colorado and some lingering mental health issues to deal with but things are stabilizing and are getting better.

    I am alive
    I am healthy
    I am sober
    I have my family

    I am blessed

God Bless you all and may the New Year bring you all peace and prosperity

I guess it is all about perspective. There really wasn’t anything “bad” about last year, as far as years go. Each was a gift, just as every one that follows will be a gift to those who experience them.

Look for the good in them.

Yes it’s a matter of perspective. 2012 was a fine year personally for my family, even including the bad stuff. May 2013 be better than the last.

    Perspective certainly is important.
2012 was a terrible year for my family and me. We went from middle class prosperity to struggling to keep a roof over our heads.
It isn’t because we’re spendthrifts; we’re frugal and cautious with our money. What really killed us is that we’re middle aged construction workers and skilled tradesmen. I put in almost 300 job applications last year and did whatever work I could find, doing anything that pays.
When your trade is in industrial construction and maintenance and the government puts up huge roadblocks, reducing demand for labor, it quickly becomes a buyers’ market. Younger guys have a huge advantage. Experience doesn’t mean shit anymore. Now they want to know what formal education you have. 26 years in the trade means nothing without NCCER certification, which takes several years and is geared toward people in high school. The cost is out of reach for an unemployed old dude like me.
There was one job I applied for out west that sticks out in my mind. I followed up about a week after sending in the application and was told that they advertised for a single job opening and received over 25,000 applications.
Just before Xmas I received a phone call from an application I put in last September and hired on with an outfit that builds “big box” stores. I start in about a week. My brothers found jobs late in the year but the assholes only pay helper’s wages for journeymen’s work. Maybe ’13 will be better.

Still doing decently on raw income, but I’m no longer an employee. In my industry, it’s becoming very costly to hire employees, and so rather than working a few years at a company, since the recession it’s mostly been 6-month contract positions. This means the Self Employment tax hits me, and so my tax bill has sucked more than usual since 2010. I suppose it’ll suck worse after the tax raises in 2013. It also means I pay for my own health insurance, instead of getting employee benefits… and also holidays and sick days don’t exist either.

Thanks to Obama and his Merry Band of Drunk Chimpanzee Baddies, for making it cheaper to contract instead of hire (sarcasm). You REALLY did me a favor there. But, I roll on anyway. Happy New Year anyhow.

America is entering a new economic normal, a reality where almost everything that should be going up is going down, and everything that should be going down is going up.

The United States begins 2013 in uncharted economic waters; America has never been here before.

Consider, for example, these seven “firsts” for the U.S. economy:

    1. All-time record annual average gas price: In 2012, the average cost of a gallon of gas eclipsed the previous record by nine cents, bringing the annual average to $3.60.

    2. All-time record food stamp participation: As of last month, for the first time in American history, 47,710,324 individuals — roughly one out of every seven people living in the United States — now receive food stamps.

    3. All-time high youth unemployment: In the last four years, average youth unemployment eclipsed the previous record rising to 17.5% — the highest ever in recorded U.S. history.

    4. All-time high number of Americans no longer in the labor force: Never before in U.S. history have so many been sidelined from the workforce. Today, a record 88,921,000 Americans are no longer a part of the U.S. labor force.

    5. All-time record number of Americans collecting disability: Medical advancements and technological innovations have increased life expectancy and made workplaces safer. Still, the number of Americans collecting Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) has skyrocketed in the last four years. Today, a record 8,827,795 individuals collect a disability check averaging $1,130.34 a month.

    6. All-time record number of Americans living in poverty: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a record 46.2 million people in America are living in poverty, the highest number in the 53 years that the Census Bureau has collected the figure.

    7. All-time record U.S. debt: The last four years have exploded the U.S. debt to levels never seen before in American history. Presently, the United States is $16,400,000,000,000 in debt.

Will America continue on its present economic trajectory in 2013? Here’s hoping not.

As to 2013, it is my custom to never jinx myself by saying “can’t be worse than the last one”, so here’s to a brighter future, whatever it might take to get to that point.

We were born to live now, so let’s make the best of it, do our duty, accept our destinies and remain true to our principles, whatever the cost!

Our ancestors, wherever and whenever they might have been, did not sit down and mope, whine and gripe about the “interesting times” they lived in and refuse to do anything about it because fuck it all.

Let us promise each other not to dishonor them and the hard work, sacrifice and sheer bull-headed determination they put into making their circumstances better.

    Whatever it takes.

The future holds no terrors that we cannot face, not even death itself because, in truth, we are already dead. We were born that way and each day we’re granted is an unexpected gift.

Onwards and upwards, my brothers and sisters, tomorrow is ours if we so choose, and not ONE STEP BACK.

    Dismissed.

I am sorry that you’ve had a rough time. The fact is, you are still above ground, and if you follow in a Libertarian mindset, you make your OWN destiny in spite of everything else.

Quit blaming the government or other people for your problems. You are allowing them to dictate your life. If there aren’t any jobs where you are at, then go to where there ARE jobs.

Maybe try something different. There is a reason why employers look for younger people in the construction field — they have better stamina and they don’t have to be paid as much. As a construction worker, you probably have a LOT of transferable skills that would allow you to branch out into other related fields, such as building or facilities engineering. There are a LOT of commercial properties out there that require skilled workers to maintain and operate them. For that matter, there is always retraining. Get a grant, go to school and take up HVAC. There is ALWAYS a demand for an HVAC technician and they never really have a problem finding work.

Don’t limit yourself or you will be limited. Nobody is keeping you down but yourself. There ARE people who are thriving right now and their secret isn’t because they have money, they have the DESIRE.

I hope things go well for you in your new job. Hopefully 2013 WILL be better for you and yours.

I never meant for my comment to be “patronizing”. I was simply stating some cold, hard facts. If you expected some kind of Liberal “kid gloves” handling of your situation, then you are sadly mistaken. In reality, I am about as truly “Libertarian” as they come.

I hate to break it to you, bucko, but there is NO FUCKING BODY that you can blame for your situation but YOURSELF. PERIOD.

Wake up and smell your fucking armpits. I’m sorry but SOMEONE has to say this, and I guess it has to be me: YOU, and ONLY you, are responsible for everything that happens in your life.

I might play the idiotic liberal here, but in reality, I am a firm believer in you make your own destiny regardless of the obstacles you think you face. If you want to play the role of the victim of government intrusion, then you will BE that victim. The funny thing is that there are people who don’t think on those terms and end up doing quite well in life. They aren’t any better or even any different than you, they just don’t let themselves be held back by their own fears or imaginations.

You aren’t a stupid person — not in the least. I imagine that you even wish that you had even had taken advantage or other life choices in the past. (it is never too lake, )

I am NOT trying to be condescending here. I am only being brutally honest, which I can imagine comes off as being … brutal.

THIS “liberal” has always considered that a person’s life is what you make of it. You might consider this “patronizing” , but it is far from it. Yes, you can blame the government, you can blame Obama, but seriously, the buck stops at YOURSELF.

While I’ve always believed that government has a role in providing a “safety net” for those who find themselves in between that rock and a hard spot., I also believe that we are able to control our own destiny — and by gum, YOU need to feel that also.

There ARE government grants that will allow you to get retrained if you need it. Why not take advantage of those programs since you’ve already paid for them?

Did you miss the part about filling out almost 300 job applications? Or being willing to do anything that pays? Are you aware that the unemployment rate (the real one, not the BS story the commies push) has been between 15 and 20% for 4 years? Or that if unemployment was calculated the way it was when Carter was president (remember him? I do. This is worse) the rate would be over 25%? What makes you think I haven’t looked into, and gotten, training? Or grants? Just FYI, I have applied for several grants but I haven’t received any. You see, 57 yo white men aren’t part of a favored or protected group.

Sure, there ARE some things beyond your control, and shit *does* happen. You can walk out onto the sidewalk today and have some blue ice drop on your head from a plane flying overhead.

I wasn’t trying to be literal in my statement, I was only pointing out that there ARE a lot of things you DO have control over and employment is one of them.

Unlike many here, I have never collected an unemployment check in my life. I have never been on welfare, never used food stamps, or relied on the government to catch me when I fall. I pay into all of those programs just in case someday I will have to be caught.

If I lost a job, I didn’t blame the government, it is just business. It is the effects of Capitalism. (I don’t mean that in a bad way, either.)

single stack was complaining that 2012 has been a bad year because he has had problems trying to find a construction job in an economy that has been flat in construction. Adding to his problems is that he is rapidly becoming too old to compete with the younger workers — mostly because employers can get a younger worker for a lot less money, not necessarily the ability.

I was simply pointing out that if there are no construction jobs where you are at, then perhaps you need to go where they ARE. And if age is starting to become an issue, and the job market in construction is geared towards the younger worker, then maybe using your skills in another related field might be the way to go.

It is never too late to learn or do different things. Who knows, you might even make more money doing it.

I think you all kind of missed the point of what I was saying here.

Bzzzt. Wrong. Were capitalism not encumbered by the government and so many onerous regulations, nationwide unemployment would be close to non-existent, imo. People aren’t losing their jobs now because of capitalism. They are losing their jobs because government is dictating certain requirements that they can’t afford.

I wonder if you all would have the same derisive response if Deej’s advice to Single Stack had been posted by……Crunch, or The Emperor, or Jackboot. Seems that your hatred of Deej clouds your ability to see what appears to me to be pretty sound advice……so you can tee off on me if you like, but let me tell you something first:

I stand a good chance of losing my job in the next week or so, due to a number of factors including ongoing estate and real estate shit in Colorado that demands that I fly there about every 2-3 weeks. This stems from my mothers death in September, and requires that I spend a lot of time there to get things finished up. So, given that I won’t be teaching this semester and I have to make all these trips bsck there, I will most likely be unemployed and I am going to take advantage of the time, I’ve already registered to go back to school and improve my skills in the area that I have taught for the last 15 years…..I also plan on working my way into this school and becoming an instructor there….doing it through the backdoor by entering as a student, making connections, and then hitting them up for a teaching gig. It might work, it might not……..either way, rather than let the bitterness and anger stall me where I am, I’m going to pick myself up and move forward. It’s something I’ve been doing since September with the death of my mother and the death of my dear old dog 3 weeks ago…..I have to pick myself up, I have to move forward as painful as that has been sometimes, I can be of no use to anyone….ANYONE…..if I let myself get mired in anger and despair. I have to move forward.

I would ask that you reconsider Deej’s advice, disregard where it came from if you have to, but take a second look at it.

Deej wasn’t lecturing, he was suggesting how Single Stack could maybe make things better. It might be useful to take advice from someone who knows how to find work and do the things necessary to move up in the work world.

I didn’t miss anything in his post, it was heartbreaking to read……but unbridled anger isn’t going to improve his lot one bit, that very attitude might be holding him back. I have ten big houses being built 300 yards from my front door, they are begging for help, I sent my son up there this summer to earn a little money as a laborer. Remember he urged his followers to vote for “revenge” and white America didn’t understand what he was talking about. He was talking about revenge against white Americans. He is racist and has a serious grudge against white Americans. Only white people don’t understand him or what motivates him, the blacks and latinos understand and they turned out in record numbers to vote for him. White America has a serious problem in that it now has a large, growing population of minorities with an axe to grind and the political clout to severely harm the white majority. So, aren’t we proud of our Congress who acted at the last minute to avoid going over the so-called Fiscal Cliff! Hurray, right? Or as Nancy Pelosi, that august brainless broad/bitch from San Francisco proclaimed, “This is a happy start to the new year!”. OK, Nancy, but did you read the bill before passing it? Here are a couple of facts that maybe you, and all Americans, didn’t know:

    1. Because you brilliant legislators rushed this bill through, you left out the payroll tax holiday provision. Therefore, there will be a tax increase on a family earning $50,000 of about $1,000! And didn’t the President promise no tax increases on “the middle class”? Of course he did, but he signed this bill…so much for those empty promises. [But hey, you all know we totally believes our President is the Liar-in-Chief—you tell me, doesn’t he constantly prove it???]

    2. Because of the way it is written, it actually will increase government spending by $330 billion! No cuts like the Republicans demanded…no, not this tax and spend administration!! More spending!!

    3. And these tax provisions—most of them—were made “permanent”. Unlike the Bush tax cuts and other tax legislation passed since 2000, there is no “sunset” provision—to change any of the provisions in this bill, Congress will have to pass new legislation to change it!

    4. Because the bill was last minute, the Congressional Budget Office could not “score it”—therefore, dear Ms. Pelosi, you passed it and have no friggin’ idea how much it will cost taxpayers, small businesses, and what will be the effect on our economy.

So, a President who promoted class warfare by his “fair share, tax the rich” proclamations and speeches promises what he never intended to deliver—no tax increases for the middle class! And instead of reining in spending, the fiscal cliff avoidance bill actually increases spending. Looks to me like a big friggin’ boondoggle all around, passed by a Congress who has known for TWO YEARS that this was coming and didn’t act until after midnight on the last day, and signed by a President who has continued to promote class warfare in the United States of America but has known all along that he is slinging absolute bull manure at the citizens of the country he is supposed to be leading. One last question: where is Mr. Obama tonight??? And how much did that cost the taxpayers, eh?

This guy deserves to be kicked to the curb!

There is no fixing the fiscal mess without massive cuts in spending. Unfortunately for this country we have a bunch of politicians that are afraid to do the right thing because they love the “good life” of being a congressman or senator.

Maybe there is a reason why you never got anywhere. Look at your attitude.

Are things tough? Yes, of course they are — in many places. But not in all places.

I got my work ethic from my parents, who became adults during the Great Depression. My dad used to tell us kids how him and my grandfather would have to travel hundreds of miles away to work, stay in boarding houses for several weeks and send money home to the family. There was no just sitting around hoping that a job — any job — would come find them.

I lost a lot of jobs working in radio. It was the nature of the business. To keep working in radio, required constantly being on the move to another city or state. I probably moved around more than most migrant workers over the period of the eighteen years I worked in radio. I finally came to the realization that I needed to expand my skill set to make me more salable in the job market. In the years that have followed, I have picked up a LOT of skills that allow me to do a lot of different things. I have traveled all over the place to where the work is at — because it certainly isn’t going to come to me.

I now have to leave the country to do what I WANT to be doing. That is why I am working in North Vancouver British Columbia right now. It is where the work is at. Recently, I’ve traveled to Amsterdam, Dubai, and Israel for work. I will be in Dallas and Houston in two weeks for a future project there.

Is this normal for most people? Probably not, but there ARE indicators that will allow you to actually look for work outside of your area in a place where the work actually is. Head hunters are a great resource for locating where there might be solid work prospects for someone.

Downtime is also a great time to improve your skills, gain knowledge, maybe even improve licenses and certifications. A lot of the people who are “out of the job market” right now are not just sitting on their ass complaining about it, they are back in school training or retraining. There are many sources of grants available for this both public and private.

As far as me “campaigning” or “voting for” Obama, I did neither. Sorry to burst that misconception for you.

I don’t mean to sound like an asshole about this, but perhaps you are looking for work in all the wrong places? So you can no longer handle the physically challenging work any more — I couldn’t either. It is one of the reasons why employers like who Single Stack described tend to look for the younger workers — it is about stamina and physical ability. We all get to a point in our lives where our bodies can no longer keep up with the rigors of some types of work, so we have to either move up the ladder to a more administrative role, or into another field that doesn’t break us into tiny pieces.

We get to a certain place in life where we either try to move into supervisory positions or into another field altogether that isn’t quite so physically demanding. Sales positions come to mind here. Maybe consider real estate or some other high-end commodity that can gain you a large commission. Not into sales? There are other less demanding trades that older people find themselves in.

Have you considered maybe going back to school in culinary arts? Become a chef? I have a friend who used to work as a logger for almost thirty years who could no longer make it in the woods and ended up becoming a drunk for about ten years. He cleaned himself up and got a grant to go to culinary school for two years and he now owns two restaurants in Seattle and is doing quite well for himself.

The point is, opportunity doesn’t always knock at your door. Sometimes you actually have to go out and look for it. You have to network with people, seek things out. Sometimes it might take having to look in other areas and other fields to find that opportunity.

    LC Grammar Czar, G.L.O.R. says:

It’s the same as a skinny person “lecturing” fat people on how to get into shape.

From everything I gathered, it sounds as though he was staying in the one place and looking for work that really wasn’t there.

And the reason why I haven’t “wanted” for those things isn’t because I am have some kind of magic touch, but because I have put myself into a position of being self-sufficient. I’ve worked hard to get myself to where I am at right now. I’ve made sure that I do have those built-in safety nets to fall back on. I have made sure that I can do a lot of different things. I am constantly learning new things. I build on past experiences and carry those experiences forward. I refuse to be a “one-trick pony” and because of that, I am able to have more than one avenue to travel on

All I am saying here is that EVERYONE has options available to them. You and I had a conversation not too long ago on FB about the same kind of thing. I am not saying any of this to be “condescending” at all. In fact, if anything, I am just being brutally honest as any true libertarian would be.

That old saying about pulling oneself up by his bootstraps really fits in this conversation. I find it ironic that some here spend their time blaming Obama, the government, or some other being or entity for their bad situations instead of just forging ahead and moving out of those bad situations. Yes, we could just sit here and moan and groan and complain about how “unfair” things are and how “bongo” hates “Amurika” so that is why they are out of work.

Or we can just offer suggestions and maybe a hand up so that they can get out of their slump and onto better things in life.

If you read carefully here and honestly, you might realize that I am NOT talking down to anyone here, I was merely offering some constructive criticism and possible suggestions of how to get out of the hole they are in.

Most of the time it ISN’T the government’s fault. Most of the time it is simply not knowing how to climb out of a deep hole. There is no fault in that, just that someone needs to be shown the way out.

I’ve been around here on this little blog a long fucking time since 2003 actually, and I got a memory a mile long pal, so that statement right there isn’t impressing me, Not One.Fucking.Bit.

I’ve been on UE, Briefly, twice in my life, 2 weeks in 1995 when I left the US Navy and was looking for a job and about 2 months in 2002 after the Contract I worked went to another Defense Contracting company, who didn’t give me a deal I could work with to transfer over. Then I “went were the jobs are”. Not every one can do that. Are you telling me with that asinine drivel that your somehow better than me or any other person here because we went on UE? Welfare? Food Stamps? Sure fucking sounds like it.

That statement right there …not even condescending – you blew through that threshold like a F-14 busting the sound barrier at mach 2.5 ….That’s just plain fucking tone deaf and utterly fucking uncalled for, especially given the fact you ain’t no fucking better than any one else here despite your WAY over elevated opinion of yourself.

Anyhow, you know, me – you know what I do. Much to my discomfort, and admitting we have something in common, Like you I’m a gypsy. I go where the work is, been doing it for over 12 years now. I’ve been literally the epitome of a sailor all my life, a girl in every port er…well not so much these days – wandering to dark and mysterious places- god knows it’s been a hell of a ride.

But the question “is this normal for most people”, bears some discussion here. Frankly as you said – no it is not.

What I think you might have glossed over here and what sparks a negative reaction in some posters, myself included, is you and I – people like us have a wonderful support system backing our gypsy ways up. We also have after doing what we have done for so long the finance resources at our disposal to do so. Faae it there is a ton of money to be made working over seas. It’s just how it is.

For example after coming back from Iraq in August of 2011 I had to move to SC for work, set up a place, first months rent security deposit, utilities, furnishings, CHA-CHING…there goes about 4K….that was 14 months ago.

Last month time to deploy – Design works done and it’s time to close up shop in SC – Move back to TN and wait for the deployment orders to come down from on high….Gotta jump on a plane and fly 8,000 miles, set up a new place …okay done.

Oh wait a second ..doing that cost me a very cool 5,000+ thousand fucking dollars,so far and I’m still spending and that’s the very basics…..look around you man, people out of work for months on end barely keeping their homes and food on the table – they ain’t got the money to do that.

And really? Doing this for the job I work now…it’s been a hard road to haul… do the math – we’re burning though almost 10,000 fucking dollars in a little over a year just moving around – that doesn’t count keep up with my obligations for my home in TN… it’s been tough. I can’t imagine someone being out of work for extended periods of time being able to pull off some of the stuff I did this last year. But yeah – sure “Just go where the jobs are”….uh huh…

Aside form the money issues, That support we enjoy is also in the form or our wives and immediate family who have to rise to the occasion – keep the home fires burning – house repairs up, animals (should they be a part of a person’s life) fed, cars running etc.

It’s a fucking tough and sometimes miserable life and It takes a very special type of spouse or if your so inclined to lead an alternative life style – partner to do this. It’s not simply a case of say SingleStack looking at his wife and saying – take care of this house, and all that goes with it – I’m jumping on a plane to go to Timbuckto.

I’ll give you an even bet that – faced with that sort of situation that, 80% of the marriages out there would fail within a year.

I’ve been married now since Early 2006 – almost 7 years – do you know how long I’ve actually been home to be a husband in that time? About 18 months all totaled, one time I was GONE for 19 months straight longer than my total time spent at home…t My wife kept on plugging but last year the majority of that 18 months I was home for 14 Months – I was in the US partly trying to save my fucking marriage.

So what happened? Why ? Really, nothing. There were no disasters or self inflicted wounds like I got caught with my hand in the cookies, got a mistress, she had a little something on the side…. Nope none of that.

It was simply a case of us being apart so much had taken it’s inevitable toll. We hardly recognized one another it seemed at points. So back I came – an entire year, and honestly it was a catch-22 while I was home to enjoy some of my hard labor and sacrifices – and reconnect with my marriage and wife…..I was still gone – I lived and Worked in SC and drove 6 hours one way on weekends to come home to TN. You have to take what you get I suppose.

I’m not detracting here from Single Stacks or any other Rotties Spouse or family, not in the least, what I am trying to say is some folks don’t have that ability, maybe there’s a health issue, maybe there’s a child that has needs above and beyond the norm, maybe the spousal unit just isn’t going to accept it, who knows, all of it making it neigh on impossible to do what we do. Maybe even despite the willingness to do so, where the jobs are, ain’t paying enough to either move home and hearth or run two households like I did.

While I understand the mentality of “you gotta go where the jobs are”, as I live it as a matter of course, and that’s been my outlook for years, I put a tremendous load on my wife with that ….I also command a salary that enables me to do that…and still it’s just not that fucking easy to do. To blithely assert that is is does in fact make you sound like some condescending jerk…I’ll not apologize for saying it either ….that’s the facts.

Here is the response reporter Tom Purcell got when he questioned White House insider Deep Mole in response to the pork laden Sandy Relief bill.

Many news outlets are reporting that President Obama’s proposed $60.4 billion federal aid bill for Hurricane Sandy victims is packed with pork. I contacted my White House insider, Deep Mole, to get some answers.

Purcell: Isn’t this another example of reckless politicians exploiting an emergency to fund pet projects and pork?

Deep Mole: Pet projects? Pork? There is no pork in the president’s proposal.

Purcell: You’re nuts. As this bill worked its way through the Senate before Christmas, Democrats slipped in all kinds of non-emergency goodies. Then they offered more goodies to Republicans to win their support.

    Deep Mole: Goodies?

Purcell: Why does the bill include $2 million to repair roof damage at Smithsonian buildings in Washington, D.C.?

Deep Mole: The Smithsonian is a national treasure that Sandy victims may one day visit. We must make sure they are not traumatized by leaky museum roofs!

Purcell: Nice try, my friend. Why does the emergency bill include $336 million for Amtrak-related expenses?

Deep Mole: Amtrak is a common mode of transportation for New York residents to travel to Washington and go to the Smithsonian. We must make sure Sandy victims are not traumatized by broken-down trains.

Purcell: You are clever. Then explain why the emergency bill includes $8 million to buy new cars for federal agencies.

Deep Mole: Many federal agencies are assisting Sandy victims. They need new cars from government-owned General Motors to drive to the areas where government services are most needed.

Purcell: You’re good. Then explain why the bill includes $150 million for fisheries in Mississippi and Alaska.

Deep Mole: Hurricane victims are known to work very hard cleaning up their messy homes and burning excess calories. It is essential they have access to high-protein American fish!

Purcell: Then explain how $4 million for repairs at the Kennedy Space Center has anything to do with a hurricane in the Northeast.

Deep Mole: The John F. Kennedy Space Center has launched many historic flights into space, bringing inspiration and hope to millions of Americans. Aren’t inspiration and hope what Sandy victims need most?

Purcell: Not bad, my friend, but this waste is yet another example of our politicians “not letting a good crisis go to waste.” Our country has almost $16.3 trillion in debt. We are accumulating additional debt at the rate of $150 million an hour — yet the gravy train keeps rolling. Our political leaders are out of control.

    Deep Mole: They are?

Purcell: Yes, the Taxpayers for Common Sense explain that the federal government has established a clear definition of what an “emergency” is to determine which incidents or events are worthy of federal relief. Emergency spending should only support something that is necessary, sudden, urgent, unforeseen and not permanent. Those are the rules.

Deep Mole: Rules? The Senate has not passed a budget in more than three years. There are no longer any rules. In our republic the only thing that can stop out-of-control politicians from spending recklessly are the voters — and a majority of them no longer care about what we waste money on, so long as they get their cut.

Purcell: Well, if the pork-laden version of the Sandy bill passes the Senate, the only hope is that the Republican House will do its job and strip out the waste. It is called checks and balances.

Deep Mole: So naive. If Republicans in the House do anything to hold up the bill, the president will tar them for withholding assistance to the victims of Sandy and the media will saturate the airwaves with images of the obliteration Sandy caused. Dumb Republicans can’t win for losing.

In fact, if it hadn’t been for a series of severe and life-threatening health issues a few years ago, I probably would still be estranged from them. I chose to go out on my own, and NOT follow in the footsteps of my parents and siblings. Got almost through law school before I made up my mind that it wasn’t for me. (I actually could have graduated, but in my last semester I changed my major and turned my back on the family.)

Now yes, I am back together somewhat with my family, I do have access to my own trust, but with the exception of some medical bills a couple of years ago, that money hasn’t been touched. I had even started to get involved in a role in the family business a couple of years ago, but have since opted out mostly because I have an entirely different direction in my life than my family’s, and while I am in contact with them on a fairly regular basis now, we are of two completely different worlds.

So sure, I have access to money should things ever become so bad that I might need it, the fact of the matter is that I haven’t needed it to get me through times without a job. Honestly, I would probably collect unemployment insurance before I went to the trust fund for exactly the same reason I would collect auto insurance if I drove my car into a wall — because I paid into it. But fortunately, I haven’t driven my car into a wall, and I haven’t needed to file for, or collect unemployment insurance.

The reality is, that if that money were to completely disappear today, I wouldn’t even notice it missing. I know how to live within my means, and I try to make sure my means is at the level I need it to be. If I became broke today, I know I could adapt — because I have been there before, and know exactly how to get back on track in a very short time.

—– for the rest of your comment —-

Look, you have to start using just a little logic here. If a person — and we will use Single Stack as an example here — has spent most of his life working in the construction field and now he is nearing the South side of middle age, and he lives in a region where there is a depressed new construction market and the few people employers are hiring are the younger workers who are willing to work for substantially less, then maybe it is time to start rethinking a strategy here. There are some options:

    A. Continue doing what you are doing for a year and not getting anywhere.

    B. Maybe start looking at places where there appears to be a building boom if construction is the field you want to remain in.

    C. If it is the region you want to remain in, then maybe start looking in other related fields. For example, say you were a plumber, and had been for thirty years. You might want to start looking at plumbing supply houses for work. Maybe look for work as an estimator, or an expediter. If you have an overall experience in the construction field, perhaps looking for a job as an inspector either public or private might be good for you. These are just an off-the-top-of-my-head suggestions I am giving here to point out that there ARE many directions an average person can take.

    D. Maybe you’ve always dreamed that someday you might go into another line of work, but never really had the opportunity to do it. (I have never understood that “opening up a bait shop” thing, and that isn’t exactly what I am talking about) Maybe you need to go back to school, be it technical or actual college, to get to the next level in your employment and you never really had the time — until now. A LOT of the people who have “dropped off the unemployment” calculation are not sitting at home drinking beer and watching The Price Is Right, they have gone to (or back to) school while the employment situation is down. In some states, there are programs available for job retraining that are tied to the unemployment insurance. There are even some non-profit organizations that will either fund or offer OJT for displaced workers where a person can earn a paycheck and gain some valuable job training. Down in Seattle, where Boeing is a major employer, there are numerous non-profit organizations that are actually Boeing vendors who will “hire” an unemployed person and put them through a Boeing training program for manufacturing aircraft. They might get the equivalent of minimum wage that is tax exempt, for a six to nine month training program, and then go on a short list for hiring at one of the many Boeing plants in the country. There are programs that will train people to work in the culinary fields as trained chefs, Microshaft has a couple of programs for employment training and so does Nintendo. Again, this is top-of-the-head stuff here, and I am only referring to programs in and around the Seattle area because that are the ones that I have direct and current knowledge of at the moment. But there are other similar programs in other cities and states, there are even public and private grants for technical schools and colleges. Most of the time it is actually a BENEFIT not to have money to qualify for a lot of these grants.

The thing is, it is VERY easy for a person who loses a job to get stuck in a hole that seems to get deeper and deeper as the days or weeks go on. They focus ONLY on trying to get a job doing what they have been doing for years and they don’t know how to think outside of that hole.

What you want to label “condescending” is nothing more than being brutally honest here. I have only been trying to point out the different options available and all I get from a few of you is some jackassery. You want to make this about me, and it isn’t.

So if it is condescension you are looking for, then just go ahead and continue on the way you are. Blame the government for all of YOUR problems. Look out for those black helicopters and government agents coming to get your guns and putting you into FEMA camps where the death panels can determine whether you should have that heart bypass or not, while you are being forced to pray five times a day. Wring your hands and worry that Sharia law is coming to a town near you. Do everything BUT consider that there are logical ways out of a hole and that just considering suggestions from someone who challenges you to think isn’t such a bad thing.

Because all I did here on January 1st is to wish you all a Happy New Years. Now I kinda regret it.

I really don’t have much more to say…

I Never said you did collect a check from Uncle Sugar or other entity. Why would you when you have other resources available to you?

My Point is and remains – LOGICALLY …it ain’t as easy as you would make it sound. It all comes down to one thing – Money.

Moving, going to college, some sort of retraining is an expensive endeavor you know it I know it, but as is par for the course engaging with you – you won’t hear it. You’re the smartest guy in the room, we get it. :em02:

My sister got laid off from 15 an hour at Coca-Cola and shelled out 1500 to be a nurses assistant – a fucking bed pan jockey – but because the fucking GOVERNMENT mandates that there has to be a license to perform this just over minimum wage job…out comes the check book….I know because I helped her PAY for it. I also gave her a car to drive, because with out some help she was well and truly up shit creek with no paddles.

Need a state sanctioned and approved course and a god damn LICENSE to cut someones hair these days…Government going to get theirs – but nahhhhh don’t blame them for the plight of the workers … the darling benevolent souls…

Hell I looked into maybe going back to sea – got a friend that got in the business years ago- he’s a Captain now, running tugs in the Gulf – Pay’s decent – home more- hell I thought why not?

Oh wait lets jump through 3 fucking separate federal agencies hoops, pay for hundreds of dollars in drug tests, and medical exams – to just be allowed to get on the fucking docks shall we?

Then just getting a ABS rating – cough up a few grand and I was in the GODDAMN NAVY for 10 fucking years, I navigated AIRCRAFT carriers – but nope in the eyes of the fucking feds I don’t know port from starboard or fore from aft …I personally could have done it – but for millions of other Americans out there..I doubt they have the scratch to pull something like that off.

As far as Non-profits and training – for how fucking long Deej, no mention there gee, I wonder why… at minimum wage? Really –

Man you simply don’t get it, you are simply and utterly tone deaf to the fact that people across the land don’t all have those sorts of fall backs. The fucking bank gonna take your car in 90 days you don’t make that payment – the fucking banks going to take your Home in a few months later…landlord will evict after 15-30 days of rent arrears …meanwhile the electric companies sending cut off notices – the cables a long distant memory in an effort to cut costs, the water bills sky high….those are real life facts, for MILLIONS of Americans…not some pie in the sky feel good nonsense liberal hog wash about job retraining ….

Not blame the government? Well why the fuck not…

Dickless Barak and his fucking eunuch cadres up there putting up 500 regulations a fucking month..are you going to fucking tell me THAT’S not impacting the job markets?
The EPA’S crushing industry with fucking bullshit feel good laws as fast as the fuckers can get their computers to spit em out …that do NOTHING to protect anything besides their on worthless ass jobs…but nope I suppose THAT doesn’t impact the job market either…
Government Shoved Obamacare down the countries gullet and last I looked – Major employees were cutting employment – see Caterpillar and others….
Government imposed drilling bans – Gas and fuel prices double what they were 5 short years ago…
Government forced banks into easy credit loans- and the shit blew up in their stupid ass faces…

That’s the headline list – but No blame to be had there…nope.

But by all means…yep lets go from a solid middle income construction job salary and make a go for it on minimum wage. Maybe they can train at light speed so his god damn family isn’t sitting in the fucking snow next month. And good luck getting any assistance from the govies – because oh wait you don’t qualify – you made too much money the last year. So Solly Chally.

I could go on but the rule of never argue with a tree stump is now in effect….but before I go…

Regretting wishing us a happy new years…really? Well by all fucking means..in that case…I regret even breaking my silence towards you – cause yer still the same flaming douchebag you always were. So much for wishing for better things in the new year…well at least were YOU’RE concerned eh?

White America needs to be heard from, not just lectured to…. This time, the Silent Majority needs to have its convictions, grievances and demands heard. And among them are these:
    >>>
    >>> First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.. Jeremiah Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.

Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks — with affirmative action, contract set-asides and quotas — to advance black applicants over white applicants. Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated their time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.

And Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for ‘deserving’ white kids…? Is white America really responsible for the fact that the crime and incarceration rates for African-Americans are seven times those of white America ? Is it really white America ‘s fault that illegitimacy in the African-American community has hit 70 percent and the black dropout rate from high schools in some cities has reached 50 percent?
    >>>
    >>> Is that the fault of white America or, first and foremost, a failure of the black community itself?
    >>>
    >>> As for racism, its ugliest manifestation is in interracial crime, and especially interracial crimes of violence. Is Barack Obama aware that while white criminals choose black victims 3 percent of the time, black criminals choose white victims 45 percent of the time?

    Jaybear,

I’ve never had a beef with you and most generally agree with everything you have to say, but to this I must protest:

    1. A successful businessman

I have been a “successful businessman” several times in my adult life. The end of each of these periods was because the federal government moved the goal posts.

    2. Not a member of the 99%

The fact that you would use a reference to this absurdity in THIS group cost you all credibility with me.

I’m not rich, but if you are going to lump me into a class it most definitely will NOT be the smelly whiners.

    3. Promoting the virtues of hard work and education

Hard work and education only matter if the federal government gets out of the way. I have a higher education, for many years worked 18 hour days (a break from 24 hours a day in the military) and made a lot of money several times. Each time one of my endeavors came to a close it was because the federal government enacted ludicrous regulations that either directly ended my business or caused my clients to back out in self interest.

I think deej has touched a nerve with his crass delivery even if he had any valid points (which I don’t agree with). People are hurting right now. They’re hurting because their hard work and education is being smothered by overreaching, overbearing government bureaucracy that is piling on each day. Telling them it’s their fault because they aren’t working hard enough or smart enough is a little too close to ‘let them eat cake’ for even the least discerning intellect.

It’s no secret there is no love lost between deej and I over the years (yes, I’ve been around since 04) and I don’t see that deej is any different now than he was then.

Honestly both sides of this particular argument have valid points. Yes, the federal government has trashed the economy and made things suck for everyone. It has also promoted entitlements over hard work. And yes, it hobbles those of us who want to start a business with crippling taxes, burdensome regulations and outright demonization sometimes. But Deej also has a point (I admit this only reluctantly). Despite the crap the Federal Government has done, it’s still up to us as individuals to do the best we can despite it all. It’s ultimately still our responsibility — life sure as hell isn’t fair, and the government is doing the best it can to make it even LESS fair, but we have to move on anyway. And yes, singlestack might be looking in the wrong places for work. I don’t doubt for a minute he’s a hard working guy — look, I don’t think any of us here on the Rott are lazy fucks. But yeah, maybe he should change his tactics. And maybe some of the suggestions here will help him. I certainly hope so.

I guess what I’m trying to say is… everyone in this thread has a valid point. The government fucked us all over — but it’s still up to us to do what we can, ourselves, to fix it in our own lives. And I may think Deej’s politics suck like a shop vac stuck up an elephant’s bunghole… but I don’t think he’s a bad guy personally. I don’t think he’s trying to tell singlestack to eat cake. I’d like to think he’s trying to motivate and provide advice… but then again, I could be wrong. That’s my $.02 folks.

I’ve never for a moment suggested that he isn’t a hard worker. Just the fact that he is into his late fifties and still pursuing construction work even after applying to over 300 jobs indicates that he is one hell of a hard worker. If the impression anyone got out of what I said is otherwise, then they are reading it into something that wasn’t there.

    LC Xealot says:

    That was exactly my intent.

Look, I couldn’t give much less of a crap about politics any longer. For whatever reason you choose for what is causing our current economic situation is secondary to HOW YOU DEAL WITH IT.

Are you going to just sit there and blame the government for what is happening or are you going to figure out a realistic solution to your situation?

People are thriving in this country right now in spite of the economic picture. Why? Because they have found a way to not let it stand in their way. They don’t see the economic situation as a roadblock, they see it as an opportunity and try to figure out how to exploit it. Sometimes it take a little thinking outside of the box to get somewhere.

I heard on the radio yesterday that the California Highway Patrol received 50 thousand applications for roughly 250 job openings since December 28th. That is a rather extreme response to job postings, but for each published or posted job opening there are hundreds if not thousands of people responding to each and every one. Somehow you have to be able to stand out from all of the other applicants.

Most states have a displaced worker retraining program that is tied in directly to private employers. You can either go for a completely new field or improve upon what you already have. These programs are designed to build upon the skills you already possess and have them translate into other fields.

Your labor is your commodity. The more skills and the more versatile you are, the more valuable your commodity is. If all you’ve done in your work life is build different widgets, then when the widget market slows down and you are laid off, then it is real hard to find another job building widgets. But if you have other skills above and beyond building widgets — perhaps supervisory experience, or training or experience in another field, then you’ve just opened up more avenues to travel on.

Older people are going back to school in droves these days. They are entering second careers, and people are working longer in life. If they are getting too old to work in the field, they are moving into less physically demanding jobs. My hat is off to Single Stack because when I was 57 I know that I certainly couldn’t have lasted working in the construction field for very long. I suspect that even he might realize that long-term, he isn’t going to last much longer in that field at that age. So right now is the perfect time to start looking at long-term plans.

Also, some people with advanced degrees (like Masters and PH.D.s) have educated themselves out of the regular market. When you have an economy that’s hurting, no one wants to pay for an advanced degree.

If I were advising students right now, I would advise them to get college courses for the trades: auto mechanics, electronics, etc. We have enough business majors.

That’s good advice GC, my bachelors degree has been of no use except for my first year out of college….when I couldn’t find a job a couple of years out of college I went back to the local community college and started taking drafting courses. That was in 1980, I worked as a drafter and field tech for 7-8 years after that…taking more classes to learn CAD, then when I got laid off I hired on at a local graphics company that was doing 3D graphics for the military…I stayed there for 11 years and took training classes in 3D software packages like Lightwave and 3DS Max….when I got laid off from THERE I hired on at a local technical institute that was teaching game graphics and programming, I’m in my 15th year there and am probably leaving in the next week or so….I have enrolled in a local art school to take classes in design principles and painting, just to improve my chops. What I’d like to do eventually is produce enough work to exhibit in the local galleries and maybe continue teaching part time….

I guess the lesson to take from this is that it can be a weird and twisty road to get to what you want to do, but it can be interesting if you continue to grow along the way

I know a few people who have retired after almost fifty straight years of working, only to come back to the work force a couple of years later because they were bored. One guy I know couldn’t wait for retirement, because he had this grand plan of buying a motorhome and traveling around the country with his wife. Two years later, he is back at work — to put some distance between himself and his wife. lol

I have to agree mostly with what you just said. The problem is, we’ve made business careers look sexy, and everyone gets the idea that they can land a job on Wall Street and rake in $ millions in salaries and bonuses without realizing that the likelihood of that happening is slim-to-none for most people.

Nowadays though, you damn near need to have a degree in electronics and computer sciences to work on cars. Even the people working in body shops these days are no longer working with bondo and steel, they are dealing with some very exotic materials.

The thing is, there are a lot of jobs that are going unfilled because of a lack of skills needed to fill those jobs. Hard skills such as degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are in short order these days mainly because students go toward the “glamorous” degrees in business and law. (as if we need more lawyers…) There are a lot of emerging tech industries out there that are screaming for people with the proper degrees to fill them. These companies are desperate to the point where they are having to import people from China, South Korea, and India to fill these jobs.

Jay, if I can find a grant or two, I’ll likely head off to an online university for an Ed.D. in instructional design. Would I DO anything with it? Probably not, but I like learning for the sake of learning. Unfortunately, a doctorate ain’t quick or cheap: about three years and 30 grand.

I’ve also thought about getting a technical writing certificate (that takes about 18 hours…like a minor), but I’m finding that there are tons of them looking for work right now…we probably had a glut a few years back.

Another thought I’m kicking around is doing private tutoring. I could do that in addition to my regular job. I’ll be meeting with a marketing instructor at my school in a week or so. She is going to give me tips on how to market myself. I LOVE being in a university setting. So many knowledgeable people there! So many resources!

    Roger that

Maybe you can retire and buy that house in Gettysburg and start a small B & B tour business. It sounds like something you would enjoy doing, and if you have the money to do it, I would jump on it.

my dream is staring me in the face, but it’s the second time I’ve shelved fulfilling that dream to keep myself happily married. My wife is locked into her career here, and she is NOT a country girl….she loves the urban life, me….not so much. First time was when I was offered a teaching position at the University of Hawaii, it was mine if I wanted it but had to say no for the same reasons outlined above. I figure I’ll get my turn when I’m fully retired, she knows that and I think that’s why she’s so leery of me moving closer to that….she knows she owes me one. :em05:

E Ok, I am not good thought. We do not need more lawyers.

However, my thought pattern is clean.

Gladiatotor and all the rest …. Those of us who manage within the current system are the survivors and not the whiners.

So, I suppose that you consider those who “game” the system, those living on food stamps, those living on welfare are winners? They are “managing within the current system.” Because that’s the current “system,” now, a system which encourages laziness, hatred of the rich, and a sense of entitlement.

Except for you, I don’t think that any of the rest of us considered what Single Stack was saying as whining, any more than when Caveman shared the travails of his beloved wife, and if anyone had a right to whine, HE did.

You will find, LaneH, that the Rotties are a compassionate bunch, overall. Much financial assistance has flowed from the pockets of those here who have little, to help those who have nothing.

What is being done now by our government is horrendously wrong.
Anyone daring arrogance remains in mortal peril.
But I’ll find a way, always alert to pathways to a better day, I always have. Always will, tending to be a cheerful,, generous, compassionate sort. Fiercly independent.
Whiners are a depressing lot, professional failures.
You won’t find them here at the Rott.
Such analogies of success to survival remain misleading.
Say in ability for self-defense, I dare say the Rotties remain second to none.
Yet we would be hating having to do so…….
Survival at all costs?……Tell that to a Congresssional Medal of Honor recipient, it usually being presented to his wife……or his mother.
I guess it just depends on your value system, doesn’t it?

They won’t break down as fast as the politicians you put in the landfill. Better to incinerate them instead.
