God’s Speed Brother

LC Rurik just called me and it is with an indescribable sadness that I must tell you that our beloved Mike M has left this world and taken his post in Heaven.

Unknown to me he had been diagnosed with an extremely aggressive lung cancer in August. On Friday he was told that it had moved to his brain. He returned home Christmas Eve and passed away this morning.

Mike was a Vietnam Marine, a grunt who fought the NVA on Razorback Ridge and the Rockpile. Over the years he became my good friend and my mentor. Our email chains were dozens, if not hundreds or replies long, and in all those words I got to know a man of immeasurable courage, integrity, and intelligence whose counsel and friendship I cherished greatly. I was humbled that a man like him would call me his friend.

I can’t write anymore now, there are too many thoughts and emotions to allow me to write what Mike deserves.

I’m going to miss you brother. I’m sorry that we never had the chance to have that beer together.

Semper Fidelis Marine, now take your post at the Pearly Gates.

    Horrible news!

I’ll never forget his certain… way of saying things. His undeniable patriotism, great sense of humor and absolute refusal to back down in the face of wrongdoing.

Heaven has another proud warrior guarding it tonight.

UNDER the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you ‘grave for me:
    Here he lies where he long’d to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.
    – Robert Lewis Stevenson

And a better world is now yours, Brother.

I am so, so sorry, Crunchie…even to the end he spoke to no one, his Christmas present to God…himself. Some things cut through you like a knife…….but you know what, Crunch? He’s got one hell of a resume to present God. And he doesn’t hurt any more, keeping a terrible secret. He wanted to spare everyone he could pain….until he couldn’t any more. Our world indeed a poorer place for it. God Bless Him.

LC&IB Vulcanrider, MSgt, USAF, Ret growls and barks:

    The Marine Prayer

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family.

Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me. Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer to my prayer.

From the son of a departed Marine, Godspeed and Semper Fidelis, Mike, and peace unto your family and friends.

    PromptCritical growls and barks:

I was planning on dropping by here to do this, but our family has been preoccupied as of late. Thank you Sir Crunchie for the post and everyone for your wishes. It means a lot.

My dad was a wonderful guy who did so much for so many without ever asking for anything in return but friendship and respect. I owe him greatly for encouraging me to have a strong work ethic and to follow my interests. He worked his ass off for us and enjoyed life as much as he could. It breaks my heart that he left us so early.

It was his way to keep his burdens to himself. Even life-long friends he knew off-line had no idea if he didn’t see them on a regular basis. It has indeed been hard telling so many dear friends such shocking news.

He left us peacefully and comfortably early Wednesday morning, in the house he worked so hard to make a home, surrounded by his family that loved him. We already miss him so much.

ETA: This is the only blog I know that he frequented, so please let me know others or simply pass on my thanks to the members of them.

  24. 24

I was saving this set of acoustic strings for my next run through Texas.
‘Reckon’ he’s got that covered now.
‘Gonna’ be some fat angels with the new cook in town.
‘Never knew he was even sick.
    He wouldn’t worry the Cadre.
Ain’t that just like a Marine.

Our most heartfelt condolences to Mrs. M.

Indeed it was. Your dad and I, at least inasmuch as this site can be said to be a real connection, go ways back and I never once was aware that he was battling anything like this.

While I was bitching and moaning about minor stuff in comparison. It humbles me and I am grateful for the lesson. If I am granted the honor of being in his presence after I pass myself, I’ll be sure to point that out to him.

He was and is an inspiration, and I am a lucky man to have ever known him, even though I would have loved it even more if I had actually met him in person.

May Almighty G-d bless you and yours and give you strength, and please remember that your dad was not only a great role model to you, he was also the same to so many more. A life well lived and a mark left upon all who knew him.

Somebody much smarter than I once told me that the true measure of your life is not what you did, but how many people remember you when you’re gone.

Your dad is most certainly well-remembered.

I’ve been a little late to the discussion. Sorry. I was rather busy with some other matters the last couple days. But I want to thank PromptCritical and The Lord Himself for sharing Mike M with the rest of us for a while. And I should also take a momemt to thank Mike M for having improved my old neighborhood considerably before I ever got there, certain things I never had to do, because you did them earlier.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mikes passing…the world is a lesser place without him. The fact that he chose not to inform us of his condition so as to not make us share his burden is a testament to his character. Semper Fidelis Marine…we’ll take it from here.

“And when he gets to heaven
to Saint Peter he will tell
    another Marine reporting sir
I’ve served my time in Hell.”
