Twinkies Maker Hostess Going Out of Business

“We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike,” Hostess CEO Gregory F. Rayburn said in announcing that the firm had filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to shutter its business. “Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.”

Guess a little Don McLean would be appropriate?

Update:  No we blame Romney

And to my immense surprise, the union causing the problems was not affiliated with the Teamsters, who were actually trying to convince the Bakers to get with the program, and were apparently actually crossing the Bakers’ picket lines.

A union actually siding with management, and recognizing economic reality? Could this be a sign of the apocalypse?

The Hostess Liquidation: A Curious Cast Of Characters As The Twinkie Tumbles

And here comes the Hostess twist: because Tim Collins of Ripplewood, was a prominent Democrat, a position which allowed him to get involved in the first bankruptcy process in the first place, due to his proximity with the Teamsters’ long-term heartthrob Dick Gephardt (whose consulting group just happens to also be an equity owner of Hostess). In other words, the traditional republican-cum-PE scapegoating strategy here will be a tough one to pull off since the narrative collapses when considering that it was a Democrat who rescued the firm, only to see it implode in a trainwreck that has resulted in the liquidation of a legendary brand, and 18,500 layoffs.

Rebooting America, a small but vocal group formed after the Nov. 6 election, has designated Friday as National Papa John’s Appreciation Day. The announcement was made in support of Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter’s recent statement that the Affordable Care Act may prompt the pizza chain to raise prices and cut employees’ hours in order to keep them from qualifying for health care.

Through the Twitter hashtag #IStandWithPapaJohns, the group is urging people to rush out and buy Papa John’s pizza to show support, and to oppose the onslaught of social media attacks and informal boycotts of the chain as a result of its position.

As of Friday afternoon, the organizers claim to have connected with some 20,000 participants nationwide, with comments flooding the Facebook page of the “buycott” and the Papa John’s page itself.

RUSH LIMBAUGH: Hey, Twinkie fans, all is not lost. All is not lost. Are you ready for this? I have some news here from The Politico. “A new White House petition wants President Obama to nationalize the ‘Twinkie industry,’ saving the popular junk food from possible extinction.” It’s a website called “We the People.”

“We the undersigned, hereby request Barack Obama to immediately Nationalize the Twinkie industry and prevent our nation from losing her sweet creamy center.” The website is “We the People.” You know who runs it? White House. So the White House has a petition up that many people may not know is a White House petition. As far as people are concerned it’s some interested citizens who are begging President Obama to bail out the Hostess company, thereby paving the way for Obama to go in and do it, responding to public demand, when in fact it’s a White House plan from the get-go.

So let’s say it happens. Politico’s ready to write the headline: “Obama Saves Twinkies.” Get ready for it. In fact, this was predictable. I should have predicted it when the program began today, ’cause it’s just too easy.

There’s no way Obama’s gonna compromise with the owners and save it, but he’ll be glad to nationalize it. I mean, this is chump change compared to an automobile company.

And then after a while, sell it to the union, or give it to the union like he did General Motors, and then proclaim the Twinkie industry saved. Don’t laugh. Snerdley’s in there laughing. It has happened. It happened with Chrysler. It happened with General Motors.

Osama is dead; General Motors is alive. Yeah they’re Twinkies, I know Michelle is out there campaigning against Twinkies, but that’s a minor concern to be overridden. I’m telling you, don’t be surprised if it happens. ###

    No, we blame Hostess.

That is, if you feel the need to blame anyone. Two bankruptcies in eight years? Sounds more like mismanagement to me.

The average union line baker makes about $14 – $18 plus benefits at Hostess. The company wanted to cut them back to $8 – $10 an hour with less benefits.

    And for what?

In part of their restructuring, Hostess had plans on shutting down at least nine of their 33 production facilities, meaning that roughly one-third of those employees were going away anyways. At the same time, the CEO and board members just raised their salaries 300 percent and were rumored to be getting ready to sell off some of their brands — such as Twinkie, Ho-Ho, and Wonder Bread.

If they could have sold off a turnkey brand complete with low-paid employees, they stood to make a lot of money. Now all they will have are equipment assets and the brands themselves — which still isn’t too shabby of deal.

Blaming labor for the problems at Hostess? That is just a scapegoat.

More realistically, it’s that magical “market forces” you all love to point to. Less people are jamming Twinkies and Ho-Hos into their necks these days. Not when they can jam Crispy Cremes or Duncan Donuts, or a Big Mac down that hole and claim that they are eating “healthier”.

For cryin’ out loud, who wants to eat a chemical loaf that has almost no naturally occurring ingredients? I am not even sure the flour is real — it could be stucco. Polysorbate 60 puts off a toxic gas and is not only used as an egg yoke substitute, but also to thicken rocket fuel. MMMMM.

I wouldn’t start crying over the demise of Twinkies or Fruit Pies just yet. Someone is going to buy them up either as a package or separately. Is is sad that 18,500 people are going to lose their jobs because of this? Sure, but they were probably going to lose them anyways — and they knew it. Hostess was going down or away sooner or later.

Okay, I get the idea about cutting the hours in order to not have to pay for health care — which most of these places already do — but raising the prices? What is the point of that? An excuse to profit from the evil specter of ObamaCare that the franchisee isn’t going to be providing?

Also, most Papa Johns stores are franchises which are owned by individual businesses. Most wouldn’t have to provide health care to their employees because of the small number of employees they have. Even those people who own several franchised stores can easily skirt the requirement by creating an LLC for each store they own.

This is more of a political public statement than it is an actual policy. But people like you bite into it hook, line, and sinker because you WANT to believe the hype behind it. John Schnatter isn’t going to provide health care insurance, nor is he going to be required to. He probably doesn’t have to do anything that he isn’t already doing, but he can make YOU believe he is. Plus he gets free advertising out of the deal.

Yeah, anyone who works hard to make money, doesn’t suck off the public tit, is vilified by liberals and it’s because they don’t have the drive or ambition or intellect to make it themselves. They have been indoctrinated all through school in the ways of socialism and don’t get honest history lessons about socialism NEVER working. LC Gladiator growls and barks:

Union intransigence and unrealistic expectations at Hostess Brands have forced the bakery to shut its doors permanently and throw 18,500 people out of work. So much for Big Labor caring about the little guy.

A down economy and two restructurings in three years left Hostess, maker of Twinkies and Sno Balls, in dire fiscal straits. The company warned its workers, union and nonunion, to make concessions or everyone would go down in a liquidation.

Instead, one union, the AFL-CIO-affiliated Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International (BCTGM), imagined the company was bluffing and went on strike.

The decision contrasted with the majority of the workers who didn’t delude themselves. The Teamsters, hardly pushovers, issued this statement:

“Teamster Hostess members and all Hostess employees should know this is not an empty threat or a negotiating tactic, but the certain outcome if members of the BCTGM continue to strike. This is based on conversations with our financial experts, who, because the Teamsters were involved in the legal process, had access to financial information about the company.”

That didn’t matter to the striking union, whose 5,000 members pull in as much as $22 an hour plus medical benefits, get nine weeks of paid leave and a company pension. It ignored the warning and Nov. 15 deadline and now will take 100% losses on salaries and benefits instead of the 8% requested by management. Some union brotherhood — the bakers’ action took their fellow workers down with them.

Yet the sense of unreality was palpable among the bakers and the union leaders who represent them. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka declared that Hostess’ problems were caused by “Bain-style Wall Street vultures” making “themselves rich by making America poor.” It’s a nice analysis while the barn is burning, but the reality is workers losing their jobs and living on blame is even poorer sustenance than living on Twinkies.

When are unions going to start caring about real jobs and real workers?

I am so, so fucking tired of the statist bullshit about unions and social justice, and all of their other methods and strategies of legal thievery. Liberalism is a cancer that has eaten the soul of this nation. All men are only born equal; it is what they do after that which determines their fate. Don’t like your $10 an hour job? Then do something about it. Work harder. Improve yourself. Start a business. Save money. Invest what you have. Holy fucking shit. Where the fuck were your parents when you were growing up? UNIONS ARE A CANCER THAT MUST BE EXCISED

Yes, we were, Glad, and as always we were exactly right.

We said, numerous times, that a business that can’t stay in the black doesn’t need to be in business, that they need to make room for a business that can. A business that, funnily enough, would also be able to provide far better jobs for their employees.

And we were met with the usual leftist swine (and I refuse to call them “liberals”, call the parasites by their proper name, dammit) mantras of “if we don’t bail out GM, those workers will never ever work again and this will crush our economy!!!!11!!!!” which is, of course, total and utter bullshit.

The leftist swine were trying to tell us that if GM stopped making GM cars, then the demand for GM cars would just auto-magically disappear and everybody would decide to either buy Japanese or walk to work. Right. Just like having the dairy industry take a kick to the shorts for being inefficient would suddenly make Americans, all 300 million of us, stop drinking milk.

And now Deej is telling us that Twinkies won’t go away just because Hostess is going away. He’s right, for once. They won’t. Somebody else, somebody who isn’t buried under an unsupportable union weight of paid vacations, plush pensions etc. WILL buy that trademark and continue to make them.

The question left for us is, then: Why are Twinkies so much different from Dodges, much like another good question for the leftist morons is “why is oil and gas, unlike every single other commodity in the world, exempt from the laws of supply and demand?”

The answer is: “Lefties are fucking morons and if they ever open their yaps, your smartest move is to assume that they’re lying.”

    Here endeth the lesson.

Deathcare will do that by itself….it’s already begun. Workers booted to part time or to quit. the choices I was given. I took my pension, stock and ran. But companies will either downsize, meaning lay off or simply relocate, say Mexico or another big continent. Not like it hasn’t happened already, and is accelerating now. They can blame each other all they want, but they still lose their fucking jobs. Guys, you need those jobs, millions would take them in a heartbeat, and be grateful for it. Were it not for past measures on my part I would be totally boned right now, sixty year old unemployed white guys aren’t exactly at a premium nowadays. But thanks to a pension, survivors SS, life insurance and some investments, I am okay for a the immediate future, assuming the government or banks don’t screw me on that too…But what about the future? Uncertainty and fear would be my kindest assessment. I see it in others I respect and it pisses me off. What about our kids? Or parents? The same parents, after a lifetime of giving to be denied medical care because they allegedly serve no purpose to society?. . I could, and would, house and feed my mom if I had to, probably kick me out of my own house, :em06: Go to your room. I did make a promise to Dad…. any man doing that is beneath contempt in my book. but I cannot afford her medical care too……
    What are we in for???????

Don’t like your $10 an hour job? Then do something about it. Work harder. Improve yourself. Start a business. Save money. Invest what you have.

To be fair, that’s easier said that done, today. “Work harder” – the harder one works, the more work they get, but raises seldom follow. “Improve yourself” – advanced education is getting very expensive. Community colleges are still pretty affordable, but they are pricey, and it’s not a quick-fix. “Start a business” – if you have capital, and can get through all of the red tape, sure. “Save money” – damnably hard, given that the inflation rate heavily outpaces even the best savings accounts and CDs. “Invest what you have” – also damnably hard, given that there really aren’t many “safe” investments these days; the stock market is rigged, and putting your money into funds runs the risk of getting Corzined. Even bonds aren’t safe, since Ogabe may, on a whim, put others ahead of you.

Given widespread unemployment and economic chaos, most people are just in survival mode, and those with jobs are damned happy to have them. The American Dream may not be dead yet, but it’s damned sure on life support. Scary times out there.

I thought about this when writing my comment, and decided against going there to avoid putting up a wall of text, but you are of course correct in your observations about the increasing difficulty of getting ahead.

There was a time when people with skills and a willingness to work could carve out a good living for themselves and their families simply by showing up, but those days, and many of those jobs, are gone. Government regulations have all but extinguished the ability of individuals to start their own businesses without large amounts of capital and expensive legal and financial consultation. These same excessive regulations and our hostile business climate have driven millions of industrial jobs overseas, gutting the middle class. At the same time, federal student loan programs have created a bubble in post-secondary education, pumping up the price of a degree to the point where, given the poor job market, there isn’t enough financial benefit left to invest in education for a growing number of people.

At the same time, the private banking cartel called the Federal Reserve has been inflating the dollar to the point where purchasing power for many in and below the middle class has reached a breaking point. All while transferring, with the government’s tacit approval, a large fraction of the privately held wealth in our country into the hands of a few huge investment banks in order to prop them up and preserve capital and returns for a privileged few. There was a time when $10 an hour was a livable wage. Today, many of the jobs that add real value to the economy are gone. Our economy has become increasingly comprised of service industries. Few of these jobs require much skill or create large amounts of wealth for business owners, and therefore will not pay very well. This did not have to happen this way.

At the business I run, we are planning to make exactly one new full time hire over the next 12 months, and this only to replace someone. Any other needs we have will have to be filled with part-time people. I am slowly running out of ways to make the business work. I know I am not the only CEO spending sleepless nights thinking about this.

These kinds of difficulties are the consequence of one set of forces acting on us – the slow strangulation of liberty. Government interference in the economy distorts the incentives, limits the variety of responses businesses can make to trends and changes, and destroys initiative. Federal policies that have promoted consumer debt and accumulated government debt have brought this economy to a standstill. Incomes have fallen over the last four years, while inflation ravages key commodities, hurting the most those who have the least. Meanwhile, government does the exact opposite of what is needed to begin to claw our way out of this mess, by doing more of the things that brought us this nightmare in the first place.

Okay, I get the idea about cutting the hours in order to not have to pay for health care — which most of these places already do — but raising the prices? What is the point of that? An excuse to profit from the evil specter of ObamaCare that the franchisee isn’t going to be providing?

Gee, you don’t suppose that it’s because food prices are going UP, do you? You don’t suppose that it’s because gasoline prices are projected to reach 8 dollars a gallon in places, do you? And maybe he just wants to make more money, that evil capitalist. Imagine that.
