    I came up blank so I checked with the spousal Old Coot, who could only think of the Russian Revolution or else the Halifax. He is now in the other room cheating, though we won’t post it.

    So far, oooh sorry. Don Pardo, please tell our contestants their parting gifts.

    “They really don’t wanna know crunchie. Suffice it to say that Radical Redneck and BC will be delivering them in person.”

    A small clue before bedtime. It happened on the Western Front during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

    October, 1918 had me thinking Russian Revolution as well, but since the only way I was going to find out for sure was to cheat, I did. Very impressive.

    I am kinda cheating! I grew up in the NC hills on the other side of the Great Smokey’s. When I was still a teenager (lost in the mists of time) there was still a thing called the “Alvin York Memorial Turkey Shoot” on the 8th of October.

    It was an old fashioned Turkey Shoot (meaning a target shoot with a turkey as the prize) with all proceeds going to charity.

    Shot in it and LOST, twice. :em05:

    And we have a weener! On October 8, 1918 in a valley near Chatel Chéhéry, France, Sgt. (then Cpl.) Alvin C. York earned the Medal of Honor for leading seven surviving members of a 13 man patrol sent to infiltrate a hilltop German position that was holding up the advance of the 328th Infantry Regiment. In the process he killed 28 German soldiers (six with his 1911 as they charged him with fixed bayonets), captured 132 more, and silenced the machine guns which were holding up the advance.

    His citation reads;

    “After his platoon suffered heavy casualties and 3 other noncommissioned officers had become casualties, Cpl. York assumed command. Fearlessly leading 7 men, he charged with great daring a machine gun nest which was pouring deadly and incessant fire upon his platoon. In this heroic feat the machine gun nest was taken, together with 4 officers and 128 men and several guns.”

    For this action the deeply devout Christian York would receive not only the MoH, but the French Croix De Guerre and Legion of Honor, the Italian Croce di Guerra al Merite and the Montenegrin War Medal, among close to 50 other decorations. .

    Note: the assaults on the Line occurred over several months.

    BTW, peeps, Russian revolution happened on Oct 25 “old style”, i.e. it actually occurred on Nov. 7, as Russia used to follow a different calendar before 1917, which was about 13 days behind the commonly used one.
