LCs, we’re having some problems with the Edit button, so we’re going to try something a little different: Comment Preview.

Long story short, the Edit button is causing some folks to be constantly placed in Comment Purgatory. so we’re going to try this to see if it helps. (Think of it as a pre-post Edit button, as it were.)

Let us know if you have any problems with it, and thanks in advance.

(And yes, props to Deej for finding this one, as well.)

CommentLuv worked fine up to WP 3.2 At least the “free” version did. Like the AJAX Edit Comments, the authors of CommentLuv kinda stopped developing their free stuff and their upgrades usually ended up breaking the plugin.

I am still going to try and make the Edit plugin work, but first I have to find where the conflicts are, whether it is a code thing or a web server configuration. (I mean, it works fine on an Nginx web server, but this site is on an Apache web server.)

The problem, DV is that the spammers AREN’T really using a gmail addy. They are just making up addresses as they go — or more specifically, their computer is generating bogus addresses as they go. This is why none of them are actually using the bogus registrations — they never get the welcome email.

As far as you getting emails notifying you of registrations, there is no reason to be notified of ANY registrations. You should only be notified of the first comment someone makes — that’s it.

That plugin I gave you should be used once a week to delete any members who have never commented with an out date of seven days. That would wipe out any and all bogus registers and you wouldn’t have to do anything else. Everyone else on the list would have at least one comment somewhere and would be protected of the purge. You can even set it up on a cron job to do a nightly maintenance at midnight ever night, to clear out the members who haven’t made their first comment.

The problem is, a LOT of people don’t want to use a real email address — that is why we choose to use a gmail or a hotmail account. It boils down to a privacy issue. I certainly don’t use an email account that isn’t disposable on a public site like this.

I hope you reconsider your decision. You end up punishing actual people because of the antics of a spambot. There are more effective ways to accomplish the same thing without blocking a large chunk of legitimate people.

Anyways, now that we know what the problem is, you could probably remove the preview plugin and put the Edit comment plugin back on.

Except I’ve gotten about 10 – 15 reg emails since we went back live. Couple this morning, in fact.

I’ll clear out the Ban Hammer list and switch things back around, but if my emails jump again, we may need to figure something else out.

    DJ Allyn growls and barks:

I could set this site up with Multifactor Authentication. But THAT would be a hassle for some people. Dreamhost just launched Multifactor Authentication for our servers, which makes them soooper secure, but harder to log in.

I am not sure why you need Ban Hammer any more. Like I said, just let the spambots register, and go in every Saturday with that plugin I gave you and wipe them out if they don’t have an approved comment. You shouldn’t have to get emails telling you that someone registered and you shouldn’t have to hold a newly-registered account until you approve it.

Most of the SPAMBOT registrations are using bogus email addresses. When they register, the system sends out the welcome email and the SPAMMER’s aren’t receiving it. That means they can’t leave a comment. Because they haven’t left a comment, they don’t have an approved comment logged, so when you run that plugin once a week, those bogus accounts are gone.

I can also tell you how to set up a cron job that will do all of that automatically every day at a certain time. You won’t even have to think about it any longer.

I can also change the registration page to explain to people registering that they only have three days to leave a comment or their registration will be deleted. It seems to me that is someone is taking the time to make a legitimate registered account, they are trying to leave a comment. Otherwise, what would be the point in registering?

When I get home tonight I will send you some information on how to set this thing up so you don’t have to be bothered with the SPAMBOTs.

Sorry, the only talking points I regularly get are Republican talking points. That, and the endless emails from Obama asking me for mo money.

I am not surprised that Walker won though. After all, who the fuck is the other guy? Is he even well known outside of Madison? I got bored with that race a long time ago — besides, it ain’t MY state. You vote the state you deserve. I really don’t care if they vote in Michael Kelso as governor (a reference to That 70s Show)

For me, today’s election means as much to me as the one in November. I’ve really lost all sense of caring. Can anyone give me one good reason why either candidate would be a “good one”? Again, I go back to my analogy of picking which color of car to drive over the cliff in. Do I pick a Ford or a Chevy? Two door or a four door?

Can anyone sit there with a straight face and tell me things are going to be ANY different if we pick one of these guys over the other?

You might think I am kidding about all of this — I am dead serious as a heart attack. If anyone thinks that either one of these guys is going to be better or worse than the other, I have a Space Needle and the box it came in for sale. I’ll sell it cheap and you only need a lot that is 150 ft by 150 ft to put it in. (the distance between each leg of the Needle is only 136 feet — not that big, huh?)

I think all the Dems had to have was one of those Senate seats to regain the senate.

Oh, you know who the BIG winners in this race was? The MEDIA. Look at how many $MILLIONS the media was paid for advertising. That is why the media LOVES Citizens United. After all, it is the MEDIA who gets all of that cash in the end…

Oh please don’t. I don’t want it to be made any harder to comment. And I’d really like for the requirement for new subscribers to wait for authentication from an Admin to go away too.

I’d much rather have it work in a way where new commenters could put in their stuff after they registered and then, if it turns out to be an obvious spambot, we could just one-click that account into oblivion.

Here’s my recipe for a dream plugin: First, I don’t want anything even remotely resembling CAPTCHA, because it has gone beyond retarded. These days, the CAPTCHAs are so distorted that I have to reload new ones an average of at least 4 times to get something that even a HUMAN eye can read.

Second, my ideal plugin: New commenters would be automatically sent to “Pending”. I don’t mind that. I see those in a second when I log in to the back end and it is a matter of seconds for me to “Approve” or “Spam” tag them, which raises their Karma, thus making it even less likely that they’ll be put into moderation in the future. No hard work for me and people don’t have to wait until I have a chance to check the new registrations queue to activate them, which can take a while considering how much other stuff is going on and the sheer number of new registrations. New users do NOT deserve that kind of wait, it is not acceptable. What I’d like to see added to that would be an option other than “approved” or “not spam” along the lines of “this is spam, delete the comment and kill file the fucking account.”

Would that diminish the “bogus accounts?” No, it wouldn’t but I don’t honestly give a fuck if I have 3,000 accounts in the hopper as long as I don’t have to go through them. The moment one of them tries to post, however, is when I care.

    19. wonderful news!

As I posted on another thread, I have a bad habit of trying to make the best of a sucky situation as a way of dealing with it, but… if Walker had been kicked out of office, 1) there wouldn’t have been the same glaring argument against big money in politics (i.e., if he’d been defeated despite an 8:1 spending ratio), and 2) Democrats control the Senate, so SUCK IT, WALKER, and 3) when he’s indicted, it will have huge reverberations in the context of his having kept his office with the help of big donors, and of course of his being a sitting governor rather than a sad man who had left politics involuntarily anyway. So while it sucks in a big way that he won, in the big picture it might be okay after all.

IS THIS BASICALLY WHAT YOU GUYS WILL VOMIT UP TOMORROW DEEJ?

    Emperor Misha I says:

Oh please don’t. I don’t want it to be made any harder to comment. And I’d really like for the requirement for new subscribers to wait for authentication from an Admin to go away too.

And that is why I’ve advocated for the KISS principle on this. Let the SPAMBOTs register. Wipe them out after a week because they haven’t left a first approved comment. Set it up as a cron job if it is too much trouble to click a couple of check boxes and a button on a Saturday morning over coffee.

The system is by default set up to hold the first comment for approval. If that comment is sketchy, then delete it with prejudice. Remember, the qualifications to get through the purging process is to have an APPROVED comment at sometime in history here. If an account cannot boast an approved comment, then wave goodbye, because it will be unceremoniously purged from the system post haste.

I cannot think of a simpler way to handle it.

Like I said, a cron job can do all of this automatically. Wonderful things those cron jobs. Doing the menial tasks that bore us silly. And all by themselves without so much as a worry.

Frankly, I prefer the idea of getting up on a Saturday morning, pouring myself a cup of Millstone Onyx Black coffee, and sitting down at the computer and making a few clicks of my mouse and ripping some empty accounts away from the system. It almost gives me wood.

Like it or not you will NEVER get the SPAMBOTS to stop trying to register bogus accounts. But with the plugin set up here, removing one or one hundred thousand of them would only take a minute to remove, and the absolute feeling of well being the minute you know they are all gone is almost orgasmic.

    (okay, so I exaggerate)

The point is, none of this has to be hard. My site is currently getting about 60,000 hits a day, and I don’t require registration to leave a comment. If you have a Facebook, a Twitter, a WordPress.com or a Google account, you can try to leave a comment. Most of the time I don’t bother to approve them. They are plastered all over Facebook, but only a few make it onto my site. I don’t care about comments there. At the same time, I don’t allow registration. It works for me, and I don’t have to really DO anything either. A win-win.

    Sir Fresh Sign says:

Deej, i love you man, but more and more you just seem to be a house organ for the same old same old..

You know, a year ago you might have been correct. Hell, even six months ago. But I have gotten to the point where most of this political argument shit literally bores me. I have reached that point where none of it really means squat.

I mean, over the past thirty years, LOOK at who we’ve had in position and what really has been accomplished. I have realized that aside from a few superficial things, it is all the same old shit.

Right now you complain about the current fuckwad in the Oval Office. The previous one, someone else complained about. The NEXT one will be complained about also. The REALITY is that it really doesn’t matter who that fuckwad is.– they will ALL be fuckwads. They aren’t running anything any more that We The People have control over our government. The shit is STILL going to hit the fan and there is nothing ANY of us are going to be able to do about it.

Obama isn’t a bad man. Neither was Bush, and neither will Romney be. They are all just place holders and nothing more.

I have divorced myself from politics pretty much — and why not? We could sit here and debate political points until my hair grows back. At the end of the day, none of it means shit.

I could spend all of my time thinking about how I think things SHOULD be, but that is a complete waste of time. Whatever will be, will be.

You cannot imagine how fucking sick and tired I am of politics. I would sooner pass a fucking coconut through the head of my dick. Do you get the picture yet?

In case you haven’t picked up on it, I have been going through a transformation lately. I don’t see any one side as being “right” or “wrong”. I just see it as a waste of my time. It is sometimes interesting from a curious viewpoint, but I can no longer take any of it all that seriously.

Sometimes it IS fun to make fun of those who DO take this crap seriously.

Life is short. I know that now. I have MUCH better things to do with the time I have left. I can only hope that I have a LOT of time left, but I have to live it as if my last day is tomorrow.

I just don’t have time any more to worry about the stupid shit. I have more important things to think about.

And yes Misha, on a few things I am probably to the Right on than most people here. Always have been.

Now good night. I can sleep soundly knowing that I managed to make it through another day here.

Actually yes. Barrett was the guy who was defeated by Walker in 2010 by a similar margin. He’s most famous in Wisconsin for being the latest donk mayor to fuck up Milwaukee.

You might think I am kidding about all of this — I am dead serious as a heart attack. If anyone thinks that either one of these guys is going to be better or worse than the other, I have a Space Needle and the box it came in for sale.

Well, Walker did take the state budget from a few billion in the red and put it in the black in a little over a year without raising taxes. He cut off the public unions’ ability to drain the treasury dry with their ridiculous pension and benefits schemes. He even saved tens of thousands of teaching jobs in the bargain for every district that was a smart enough to sign on to his plan. The only districts that suffered the loss of teaching jobs were the districts that foolishly kept their original contracts.

I’d say that’s quite a bit better than his predecessor, Doyle, who caused these problems in the first place.

I’ll sell it cheap and you only need a lot that is 150 ft by 150 ft to put it in. (the distance between each leg of the Needle is only 136 feet — not that big, huh?)

We’ll see what the place looks like in about six years. That is usually how long it takes before the effects of ANY policies of ANY government administration is known.

I am of the mind right now just to give y’all what you clamor for, and as much as you want. If you can make a go of it — then cool. If not, then maybe you will get it out of your system and come up with something else.

I’ll just be along for the ride.

You see, I don’t think that there is really ANY one out there right now who can “make things better”. At least not in the short term. I see us heading in the direction of Mexico, with our own brand of oligarchy, where those with the large money buys the government. Republican, Democrat — just labels now. Each are bought and paid for by Big Money.

Politicians get into office to make money after they leave. They go in with a certain amount, and leave to make $millions. How? Because while they were in office they fastened their lips on the asses of the Big Money and kissed hard. They passed favorable legislation and as a reward got set up for life once they leave office.

During the day, our Congresscritters and other office holders make a great show about how they are fighting each other to “hold the line”. After hours they are all at the same parties, and bars having a grand old time together. At least three times a week each congresscritter is in a corporate fundraiser for their next election. These fuckwads spend more time schmoozing for money to be re-elected than they do on the People’s Business.

Okay, I have had enough of the ranting for today. It is time to get back to my regularly scheduled life…
