Algae Fuel!

Because, let’s face it, who would know more about the potential of pond scum than Ogabe does?

Zero is actually accomplishing one of this campaign promises…getting gas up to $5.00 per gallon. The last figure I heard was the Al G. Diesel (not mine; I think I stole it here…) was about 4.4 times as expensive as regular diesel…

Thanks for nothing, Obama. You asshole.

Well….algae research has been going on for years and that includes using it for fuel. I don’t remember what I saw in the way of explanation. I believe it’s dried and burned directly. The little guys contain flammable oil-like substances. With that said we are decades and decades from even considering it’s use and prolly millenia from using it on a large scale.

As far as any commercial application for it goes, there’s this…

… and that’s the cost that Murtha-ship-naming, Navy and Marine Corps subverting, Obama lackey Ray Maybus is paying for it from some Pelosiland based outfit named Solyndra Solazyme. Add state and federal fuel taxes on top of that and you’re starting to talk real money. Heck of an idea, Barry.

Green idiots are exactly that. If so-called “green” energy is more expensive, what that really means is more work has to be done to make it usable. If we follow that to its logical conclusion, that means it is less efficient. Less efficient, of course, means more waste. And lastly, more waste means.. less green.

The best thing people can do for the environment is drive their beater-mobiles into the ground, keep using that shitty fridge until it fails, roll with the ancient A/C unit until it seizes up, and keep using gasoline until something else equally cheap becomes available for common use, or we run out of it, whichever comes first.

Unless you can show that the latest is really a cost/benefit ratio winner, don’t do it just because it’s shiny and new!

Wouldn’t it have been refreshing to see Stephanopoulos, Gregory, or anyone else on the left, take as intense an interest in Barack Obama’s long relationships with his hate-mongering pastor, Jeremiah Wright or admitted terrorists Bill Ayers and his wife Bernadine Dohrn as they have in Rick Santorum’s personal views on birth control?

And wouldn’t it be nice, just once, to hear someone — anyone — in the elite media suggest that Barack Obama’s vote in favor of infanticide when he was a member of the Illinois State Legislature was just a bit more “controversial” than Rick Santorum’s suggestion that traditional marriage and innocent human life are worthy of society’s protection. When evil is called good, and good is called evil, societies die. When common sense becomes controversial, we are on the brink.

And that would only be if you are willing to void the warranty on said vehicle.

At the risk of burning his Emperors bandwidth, Let me yammer here a little about the diesel boondoggle that is going on in this country. Besides, It’s 5 am..I’ve got another case of insomnia so bear with me.

Fact # 1 : You can’t run the old style diesel, bio diesel etc in ANY of the post 2008 production diesels without immediately voiding the warranty, and trust me they will know, the new diesel blend is a rather attractive sea foam green color, from the dyes they put in it. If you run anything else and your turbo clogs from soot, you burn a valve, piston or something, and you take it in, they will know immediately, and the dealership is going to tell you very quickly to kiss their ass because your warranty is null and void. You’ve also violated numerous Federal Laws.

Fact# 2: It is a VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW to run anything but ULS Diesel in any diesel engine produced after 2008

Okay so what is ULS Diesel vs “old style diesel” that I’m yapping about? Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, or Diesel # 2 It’s federally mandated fuel for all post 2008 production diesel engines.

As mentioned previously (in another thread) I just let my 2008 Ram 3500 Dually with the 6.7 Cummings Diesel in it go. While getting 14-18 + MPG in a vehicle that big is quite an impressive feat in of itself, with diesel creeping past 4 bucks a gallon it became an untenable position for me to keep. So I trade down to something smaller.

And no, damn it, I don’t suffer from penis envy, or short mans syndrome or any other pyscho babble bullshit maladies. I live out in the sticks. I need a truck, my trucks work …hard. End. Stop.

To explain further why I owned such a behemoth of a truck, I owned said vehicle because, I live on a ‘hill’ in TN, with a almost mile long steep grade gravel driveway, that winds though dense woods and brush. When I say “steep grade” I’m not joking, some parts of this gravel lane are probably 20% or better grades. Most cars break out in a cold sweat just turning into the lane to my home let alone trying to climb up to the house. CASE IN POINT: My nieces BF has a Mustang, I have to go get his sorry ass every time he comes over ..his little street effects clad street car can’t make it up to the house with out leaving half of his cute pussy ass spoilers and ground effects on my driveway.

That’s why I had that vehicle, additionally, My home, bought in 2006, was not 100% finished, nor is the land around it, (almost 5 acres), fully cleared, and that truck…i worked like a mule. It hauled 4,000 lbs of lumber, in one trip no less, , it hauled the tractor up and down those grades that I used to do excavation, it hauls brush dirt, 150 x 80 lb bags of concrete at a time, it hauls a seasons worth of fire word, that is to say almost an entire cord …again all in one trip, I yanked stumps out of the ground with it, pulled whole trees out, it climbs the hill loaded to the gills and it does a job that only something like it can do.. Try to do that sort of work with a run of the mill gas powered truck and you’ll kill it. Hell, I am worried with the 2500HD GMC 4X4 I just traded it for… that it will not be up to the same task, but we shall see.

Anyhow, back to the main point here, That 6.7 Liter Cummings in that truck added 1500.00 to the price tag as it was the “Bluetec” Diesel specifically designed to run on “Diesel#2″ or the FEDERAL mandated Ultra Low Sulfur blended diesel.

But There’s cost number one that is distorting the diesel market. That same cost of 1500.00 and by this time in 2012 probably much more, is getting put into every new diesel being produced.

Cost number 2: This Federal mandate for ULS is the main reason that diesel prices have shot up from less or about the same as regular unleaded on average, to above mid grade and in some locals higher than high test unleaded. To produce ULS diesel there are additional refining processes which, naturally makes it more costly to produce and that cost is then also passed on down the line to the end user.

So how did this all come about? In the early part of the decade at the behest of the “Green Lobby” The Federal government mandated that any Diesel Engine produced after 2008 or later MUST run on ULS diesel. The diesel Injection systems and all the engine internals more or less didn’t change too much, however they added additional air injection and a new catalyst system just like your gas engine has.

This Federal Mandate was all done very quietly, hidden inside another bill or budget, and passed, and even as a diesel owner I wasn’t aware of this until after I bought my truck and suddenly found myself double checking the diesel pump for a sticker that said “ultra low sulfur diesel”.

The Dodge dealer was quite clear on the point about what was acceptable fuel, One type; ULS Diesel only. It appeared in my manuals and other paperwork numerous times how I would void my warranty and incur the dreaded wrath of Khan should I even consider putting something other than ULS diesel in my new truck, this included bio derived home brewed diesel. Can’t blame Obama on this one tho, this shit happened way back before he got in, but took effective fully in 2008 but I’m sure as a Senator it got his vote, so hold your fire on that point, it’s the Feds over all habit of bowing to the green lobby on this one.

This Federal mandate which was mostly based on the CARB model for CA and thus foisted on the rest of the country is a direct cause to several things; one of which is the prices on just about every product that relies on a diesel powered transport system to get it to the store. Which is to say almost everything you buy.

Wondering why a loaf a bread sky rocketed in cost the last few years…did all the wheat farmers kill over in their fields? All the truck drivers quit? Hardly…it’s the ULS mandate, there’s 95% of your answer pure and simple.

Diesel was averaging about 2 bucks a gallon in 2005 or so, it’s now at or over 4 bucks a gallon in most places.

You hear how everyone is screaming about “gas prices” but you hear nary a peep about the cost of diesel, if any one got raped this past few years…. it’s the owner of diesel powered vehicles. But since there are fewer of us, we don’t garner the press attention, we’re just a bunch of “redneck truck drivers clinging to our bibles and guns” after all.

Here’s Another issue with the diesel market; While older diesel engines can and do run the new blend of fuel without issue, here’s the catch. Since ULS Diesel is now mandated, you CANNOT find the older style diesel except maybe in some way out farming communities. Truck stops don’t carry it, local gas joints don’t carry, it, you simply can’t find it. Effective of this; even if you don’t run afoul of Uncle Sam’s ridiculous fucking mandates, and don’t give a shit if you void your warranty, you’re fucked all the same, you’re gonna pay the higher price regardless, because, there’s simply for the most part, nothing else you can buy to fuel your vehicle.

This means the trucking industry which still has a few MILLION pre- 2008 engines on the road is screwed. As is the farmer with the 10 year old International, John Deere, or Kubota, as is the average consumer whom might have bought a diesel as far back as the 90′s and it’s still cruising along.

On this point, Remember here diesel is not gas, there’s a LOT of pre 2008 diesel out there, my Cummings was engineered to go a minimum of 500,000 miles with only routine maintenance before it needed consideration for a even a half way serious look at an overhaul. The big rigs with their 16+ speed trans and lower over all RPM can go several million miles with out overhaul. I know my friend’s 1996 Dodge Cummings is well past 400,000 and it still going strong. He has said that were his truck not paid off, he’d be trading too, but since it’s paid for the cost of fuel isn’t hurting him as bad.

All of this leads to the next point, what’s the federal fuel tax ? If you said 18 cents a gallon you’re only partially correct.

On diesel it is almost double at .35 cents a gallon, this is once again the Federal Government fucking us all based on specious theories that “big trucks” cause more wear and tear on the highway system and pollute more, so they should have to pay more to use them and “protect the environment” . Almost every state and local tax follows the same path as well, they will nearly double the taxes on diesel as opposed to gas.

I’ll grudgingly cede perhaps a little on that point, it’s pure physics so it somewhat is a justifiable reason for the higher tax… but double? There’s maybe a third of big rigs on the road vs cars, yet they are taxed for fuel at almost double the rate, and that’s As far as I am concerned, nothing but pure government greed. Add in the fact that no matter if you’re driving the same truck I was, at 8000 lbs or a 40,000 lb semi ..if it is not a “business vehicle” i.e. your private vehicle, you pay the same taxes on fuel, and there are no exemptions, loop holes or other write offs to offset that, you just get to eat the fuel tax increase and move on.

As another aside, I know I am jumping around some and this is getting long winded but bear with me, I know farmers, I know the cost of fuel it takes to keep a farm going, but for theory let’s say it’s 10,000 a year to keep the combines and harvesters and what not running. Or it was in 2005. Now it’s 20,000.00 ..who exactly do you think is paying that cost increase? You are…. thanks to Federal mandates in the diesel market.

So there’s your Diesel 101 lesson kiddies…and you can sit back, digest it all, and add another tick mark in your journals about how the Federal Government’s …fucking you sans reach around.
