Hey, I had to call this post something, no? 🙂

His Majesty is a bit pre-occupied at the moment, but surely we can find the time to provide our many LCs and GLORs with an open thread, so here goes.

I saw a HUGE METEOR tonight folks, over Broadway!!! No shit: it was about 10:15 pm EST, and I was walking south on Broadway in NYC (Friday night) and saw this HUGE fucking meteor lance down through the skies from 10:30 to 4:30 on the clock dial, to give you the angle. Man, it was coming in STEEP, and it looked like it was going to hit the Woolworth Building!!!

I looked online, and saw some reports about other folks on the Eastern Seaboard, from North Carolina to New Jersey, spotting this thing at the same time: I reckon we’ll hear about it tomorrow! Judging by the angle of bearing of the other sighters, it fell somewhere between New Jersey and Virginia (but that’s a rough guess).

It was brilliantly white, like burning magnesium, and chunks of flaming bits were coming off of it: almost like a Fourth of July sparkler. It was about one-third the apparent size of the Moon (I don’t know how to state that stuff in arc-seconds, etc.), and was MUCH brighter. Might have been a big “bolide meteor,” as those are the brightest.

A couple of guys were walking south ahead of me, and I heard them say, “Wow, that was cool.” Two Asian girls behind me, in party clothes, were too busy yakking to each other to see it. It was only visible for 2 seconds, between the skyscrapers as you looked downtown. If you weren’t looking right at it as it fell, you’d have missed it. And its angle of attack was so steep that it must have hit the ground almost immediately.

I can’t wait to find out what happened to it. If you look at a map of NYC and see the orientation of Broadway between Houston and Wall Streets, it points right at it.

    Big labor plans ‘Occupy CPAC’
    byDavid Freddoso Online Opinion Editor

You’d be wise to keep a cool head if you’re going to CPAC. From the D.C. AFL-CIO:

Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)With workshops like “Return of Big Labor: What Can We Learn from Wisconsin & Ohio,” and “Taking back Wall Street: The Tea Party vs. Occupy Wall Street,” the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) descends on the nation’s capital February 9-11 and local labor activists are planning a DC lesson to ensure that the voice of the 99% are heard at this elite conservative gathering. Actions are currently being planned for noontime and after work on Friday, February 10. Featured speakers at CPAC include Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, and presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum.

You may remember what the union-aided Occupiers managed to do at the D.C. conference center in November. When conservatives staged a conference there, they banged on the windows, physically harmed at least one old woman, blocked local traffic, and used children as human shields. Much of the action was caught on tape.

The AFL-CIO is planning a disruption of some sort at noon Friday and another at 5 p.m. Here are some details about the event that AFL-CIO plans for noon:

Marriott Wardman Park Hotel (2600 Woodley Rd at Connecticut Ave NW)

    Feb 10 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

What do Wisconsin Governor SCOTT WALKER, presidential candidates MITT ROMNEY, NEWT GINGRICH, RICK SANTORUM and House Budget Committee Chair PAUL RYAN have in common?

They all represent the greed of the wealthy 1% and they’ll all be at the 2012 Conservative Political Action Conference.

Join the rally featuring tents, an inflatable fat cat, puppets, “candidate Walmart,” and more to

Friday, February 10, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel (2600 Woodley Rd at Connecticut Ave NW), by the Woodley Park Metro Station

    MASSIVE Bribery Scandal at DOJ

A U.S. Justice Department source has told The Daily Caller that at least two DOJ prosecutors accepted cash bribes from allegedly corrupt finance executives who were indicted under court seal within the past 13 months, but never arrested or prosecuted.

The sitting governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, his attorney general and an unspecified number of Virgin Islands legislators also accepted bribes, the source said, adding that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is aware prosecutors and elected officials were bribed and otherwise compromised, but has not held anyone accountable.

The bribed officials, an attorney with knowledge of the investigation told TheDC, remain on the taxpayers’ payroll at the Justice Department without any accountability. The DOJ source said Holder does not want to admit public officials accepted bribes while under his leadership.

That source said that until the summer of 2011, the two compromised prosecutors were part of a team of more than 25 federal prosecutors pursuing a financial crime ring, and at least five other prosecutors tasked to the case were also compromised by the criminal suspects they were investigating, without being bribed.

Michelle Obamas warning to Gun Owners

At a recent fundraiser for President Obama’s re-election campaign in Providence, Rhode Island, the first lady told her audience:
“We stand at a fundamental crossroads for our country. You’re here because you know that in just 13 months, we’re going to make a choice that will impact our lives for decades to come … let’s not forget what it meant when my husband appointed those two brilliant Supreme Court justices … let’s not forget the impact that their decisions will have on our lives for decades to come.”

This was music to the ears of the small, affluent crowd of admirers who cheered and applauded. But to gun owners, Michelle Obama’s remarks should sound like a warning bell, alerting us to the danger ahead should Barack Obama win re-election and get the opportunity to alter the current make-up of the Supreme Court.

When Americans flock to the polls in 13 months, we will not simply decide which direction our country should take over the next four years. Rather, we will decide whether or not our fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms will survive over the next several decades.

Currently, the Second Amendment clings to a 5-4 pro-freedom majority on the Supreme Court. Just one vote is all that stands between the America our Founding Fathers established and a radically different America that Barack Obama and his supporters envision.

If you want to read something scary, take another look at the minority opinions in the Supreme Court’s landmark Heller and McDonald decisions that struck down Washington, D.C.’s and Chicago’s unconstitutional gun bans. In the Heller dissent, four justices concluded that the Second Amendment does not guarantee an individual right to own a firearm, nor does it protect our right to defend ourselves, our families, or our property. In McDonald, the same four justices argued that the 5-4 Heller decision should be reversed.

If these four justices had just one more vote on their side, their opinion — that the Second Amendment should not exist in today’s modern society — would be the law of the land today. And assuredly, the anti-gun activist wing of the court knows how close they are to gaining the upper hand. As Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg told a Harvard Club audience in 2009, she looks forward to the day when a “future, wiser court” overturns 5-4 decisions like Heller.

Praying for the health of five justices is not a sound legal strategy for ensuring that our Second Amendment freedoms survive the relentless legal assault that gun-ban groups are waging in courtrooms across America. We need a president who will nominate sound, originalist nominees to the high court — nominees who will preserve the freedoms our Founding Fathers enshrined in our Constitution.

If President Obama gets the opportunity to tilt the balance of the Supreme Court in his favor, we’re unlikely to see another pro-gun victory at the Court in our lifetime. Even worse, the 5-4 majorities in Heller and McDonald will be in serious jeopardy of being reversed, effectively eliminating the Second Amendment.

NRA members, gun owners and all freedom-loving Americans should heed Michelle Obama’s warning. We must spend the next 13 months working to make sure her husband doesn’t get four more years to destroy American freedom for generations to come.

Chris W. Cox is the Executive Director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) and serves as the organization’s chief lobbyist.

Perfect: Obama pulls combat pay for U.S. troops
But he obviously holds the U.S. military in very high esteem.

President Obama’s latest policy outrage makes no attempt to hide his contempt for our military, as he is ordering that our troops serving overseas in war zones overseas are not to receive combat pay unless they are being shot at. A Marine who lives in Florida has just posted a note on Facebook which stated that he received a letter from his PayPal account that he would only be receiving his Hazard pay (Imminent Danger Pay) if he is actually in a hostile area and at risk of being shot at…

…According to, as of February 1, 2012, this new measure went into effect, and soldiers who are to received the additional $225/mo. combat pay ‘must’ must be in immediate risk of harm. The measure is very specific in its criteria for receiving the additional pay.

This follows efforts by the president to make veterans pay for their own health insurance — even those injured in combat — and his calls last month for raises for millions of federal paper-pushers.

In other words, the president continues to siphon off more and more money from our defense infrastructure — hitting our warriors first, last and hardest in the process — to fund his green energy scams and public sector union cronies (which, coincidentally, also contribute heavily to his campaign).

This past spring, gourmet gift purveyor Harry & David filed for bankruptcy protection. The 77-year-old mail order company is an American business icon famous for its premium fruits, exquisite gift baskets and extraordinary service.

So what brought the high-end gift giant to its knees? The slide began in 2004, when a New York private equity firm purchased the Oregon-based company for $230 million in a highly leveraged buyout, only paying $82 million in cash. One year later, the private equity firm sold $245 million worth of bonds to pay off the debt and recoup its original investment. Later in 2005 they took out another $19 million. In one short year, the firm recovered 125% of its original investment and left Harry & David saddled with an insurmountable mountain of debt.

People who knew little about running a successful direct marketing business, let alone fruit baskets, were now calling the shots. Add an economic downturn and you have a recipe for disaster. Sales plummeted from $566 million in 2005 to $426 million in 2010 with only $6 million in operating profits and nearly $11 million in debt service.

When a leveraged buyout occurs, everyone loses except the private equity firms responsible for the destruction, in my opinion.

Wall Street vs. Main Street. For a long time, too many of our brightest and best graduates have been going to Wall Street. It is a new economic era where the U.S. is becoming poorer. Is there any chance that some of the folks will be accepting the challenges that Main Street has? Let’s cheer for bright Americans who want to work for Ford, 3M, or Uline over Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. Again, just an opinion.
