   We had a very interesting required class this Battle Assembly. Reminders on what political speech and activities are allowed and are not allowed.

   One slide stressed that as Soldiers we are not allowed to use any ‘contemptuous words’ referring to the President or Congress, etc.

   I recall that being stressed only once before – when I was in Iraq in mid 2009, after a few illustrative courts martial in various places around the world.

   I recall that being stressed only once before – when I was in Iraq in mid 2009, after a few illustrative courts martial in various places around the world.

   I have to admit that I find that troublesome. I suspect it’s already part of the Code, I know that it was part of my native country’s one but correct me if I’m wrong, so that’s not what I find troublesome. It’s because it’s being stressed.

   We had a ton of regulations like that. Don’t speak ill of Her Majesty, don’t disparage the duly elected government, don’t get drunk while in uniform, don’t get involved in politics while in uniform, don’t fail to salute the flag while in uniform etc., but they were never reinforced past being mentioned during boot camp because they were just “common sense” rules. The only times I remember them being brought up was when we had a situation where the higher ups might suspect that we’d violate any of them.

   I guess the powers that be are beginning to realize that there’s a situation brewing and that those of us dedicated to honor and duty might end up misbehaving because of that dedication.

   What can I say? I aim to misbehave if that’s the case.

   G-d, duty, honor, country.

   Anything else is way down the list. Try to stop me.

    BTW…contemptuous words to certain members of the government are covered in the UCMJ. Article 88 states…

    “Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”

    The official or legislature against whom the words are used must be occupying one of the offices or be one of the legislatures named in Article 88 at the time of the offense. Neither “Congress” nor “legislature” includes its members individually. “Governor” does not include “lieutenant governor.” It is immaterial whether the words are used against the official in an official or private capacity. If not personally contemptuous, ad-verse criticism of one of the officials or legislatures named in the article in the course of a political discussion, even though emphatically expressed, may not be charged as a violation of the article.

    Similarly, expressions of opinion made in a purely private conversation should not ordinarily be charged. Giving broad circulation to a written publication containing contemptuous words of the kind made punishable by this article, or the utterance of contemptuous words of this kind in the presence of military subordinates, aggravates the offense. The truth or falsity of the statements is immaterial.

    It just went up on my site a short time ago. As of now, 10,016,669 views on Youtube.

    Also, I’ve heard third hand rumors that there’s starting to be a little grumbling in the mess hall. People quietly asking when the “Domestic” part of enemies foreign and domestic kicks in.

    I think there’s a lot of discussion going on, especially since Obama and Panetta have announced the virtual gutting of the military. I don’t think they would march on the White house though. That proscription is burned into their brains by training, history and tradition. I do think that if ordered to move against US citizens, then they will refuse the order.

    I’d like to get a street-sweeper like a Mossberg

    I’m quite fond of my Mossberg 500, Igor.
    Today I did something I have longed to do for a very, very long time.
    Costs over a grand, but worth every dime. For the closest thing I have ever had to a semi-auto rifle was my lever action .44 Mag.
    Until today……….
    It was love at first sight, I fell like a rock. She’s beautiful, absolutely gorgeous…..whimpering and sighing I cradled her gently….. …..
    I could never afford it before…..and brother, me turned loose in a nice gun shop is like being turned loose in a candy shop an hour after smoking a joint.
    But in ten days I take delivery of my Springfield M1A, semi-auto,7.62 by 51 Nato. Good old .308 as fast as you can pull the trigger. A battle rifle. Now here in Kalifornia there is a ten round limit on capacity…like I said, here……..
    So now I can shoot both, 7.62 by 51 and 54.
    Now combine that with the Mossberg…………….home invasion? No problem.

    Congratulations on your purchase, Caveman. You’ll love it. A couple things… if you don’t get one with your purchase, you might want to go to Springfield Armory’s site, where you can find and download their complete M1A manual. It’s available on this page. The other thing is you may want to heed their advice and feed it only 7.62 NATO ammo. The NATO spec stuff has harder primers that will help you avoid the unpleasantness of an unanticipated discharge when the bolt seats. You can shop around on-line and find the good stuff at a variety of places. I bought my last batch here.
