From the Pagan side

First of all, let me say up front that Subotai Bahadur, Lord of the Defended Peace, is NOT a Christian in any of the multifarious varieties available. Nor am I of the Jewish faith. However, unlike those on the Left, I do not regard either of them as my enemies. In fact, the concepts of Free Will and of Covenants that even G-d must obey once entered into are fundamental to our concepts of Freedom and Liberty under Law.

The free and open practice of faith, under the equal protection of the laws; neither harms me, nor picks my pocket. Unlike the Left and their de facto allies the Islamists; I can stand hearing things I disagree with. If I disagree, I can argue back, can teach my children my beliefs and hope to do it well enough that the lesson takes [which is pretty much all any parent can do], or if I find them too obnoxious I can leave. In the first case, I trust to my wit and admitted bloody-mindedness to deal with the matter. There being no guarantee that the public forum will be inoffensive to all. Public discourse should be abrasive to rub the rough edges off of bad ideas from whatever the source.

The teaching of matters of faith and ethics is a matter for the family and church. But we are no more than temporary custodians of our children, and they will find their own Truth in their own way. If we have taught them well, and are not attacked by the state for doing so [so long as we are within the civil law] it will be the right way. If we do not have faith that our children will choose well, then we have no future anyway.

Or if I decide to leave, and one who disagrees with me chooses to… disallow that option and intrude on my personal space; then the full force of the law will be brought to bear, or more immediate action if justified. And on that point, I admit that I have signed a criminal complaint against a pastor; who decided that his sermons were so inspired that they had to be broadcast by loudspeaker at high volume over an 8 square block area with running translation into Spanish. You wake me from a sound sleep on the one day a fortnight I can sleep in; and I will be irate. Lady Pao An dissuaded me from shooting out the speakers on the church steeple a block away, so I went down and signed the complaint.

The tax exemption for all religious activity does not offend me, because it can be sure that not only would there be cases of sectarian religious discrimination in the assessment of taxes; but those of the Left would be more than happy to tax all expressions of faiths in competition with their secular humanism out of existence. The relatively small revenue losses are worth the protection of the First Amendment. Oh, and for those who point out the wealth of various churches; we do not tax [read that confiscate] wealth in this country, we tax income. And non-religious income is taxed. In the past, I have lived in rental housing on a Benedictine Abbey. The income from the gift shop at the Abbey, and their rental income [both residential and office space for various non-profits] WAS taxed. The money that they got for religious and educational purposes was exempt, as it should be.

I take no offense in the expressions of faith and joy by my fellow citizens in this, the CHRISTMAS [not generic Holiday] season. Their joy comes from their belief that their faith was made flesh, and that Mankind was to be redeemed from Death. Not a bad thing. To the extent that a Pagan Chinese can be allowed to share the joy of my fellow citizens, I will do so. And since unlike other countries, we do not have a thought police to drive people into little mental boxes; such sharing is commonplace. After all, when my family goes to celebrations of the Lunar New Year; there are a whole bunch of epicanthic fold-deficient attendees. Who are welcome.

So in the spirit of Christmas, may I offer a pair of videos, of praise and rejoicing? My HTML-fu being weak, I can’t imbed them directly, and will just put in the links.

This first, surely must have driven the wanna-be Thought Police bonkers:

And this, for the purity of the Season:

If this is the season of divine miracles; may all of the LC’s and our Emperor and his family each find their own miracle. And may that especially be so for Caveman and Mary; whose miracle will be one for all of us.

Add another Pagan’s wishes for a Merry Christmas, and a Festive Yule!

As Subotai puts it – I love my Christian brethren as much as any other. Unlike so many on the left, I don’t really care WHAT faith someone has as long as they live by it. I have the greatest admiration and respect for one of my best friends and co-workers in the Army, a very devout Christian.

His Christianity SHINES through every action – he doesn’t flaunt it, it’s just obvious by who and what he is and does and I love that about him.

In any case – Here’s a great article on how to raise Pagan sons that, with some tweaking here and there, could apply to ANY faith! Enjoy..

Can’t help but agree. Personally, I am a Roman Catholic. I don’t give a shit if you paint yourself blue and run naked in the woods baying at the moon. I don’t care if you drink Milwaukee’s Best and worship that pink and yellow ’63 Ford on blocks behind your trailer. A person’s faith/beliefs/whatever are none of my concern until you infringe on others.

The left will never understand that(folks like DJ already do but he’s an exception…..not the rule).

At any rate……Merry Christmas to all. If you do not celebrate Christmas then I hope you have a fine Winter Holiday/Yule/Solstice or whatever. Don’t run around in the snow baying at the moon……get’s a bit chilly.

    Thanks, Lord Subotai, great post.

Like Masterguns, that’s how I see it from my side of the religious “divide” as well. Your faith is your business, and as long as you respect mine, I intend to respect yours. It neither picks my pockets nor breaks my bones and I wish all of yours the very best.

It is good that the Allfather has given us many paths up the Mountain. It matters not which path one should choose; it is the
meeting on the summit that matters.

Yet we should beware of false paths, and things monstrous
and vile done in the name of “God”. It is written that by their deeds shall ye know them. Pay heed, and disbelieve!

I recall something our esteemed Lt. Natasha said once, something about Jesus loving his rebel children as well…..

I always liked that, it’s a good thought when I stray ( which is more often that I’d like to admit).

Any of you can have whatever belief or non-belief you want, live and let live I always say……That’s what earns you my respect.

Anyways, here’s my Christmas Wish for all of you

I haven’t yet come across any religion I can believe, but that doesn’t mean that I denigrate any. You have the right to believe what you want, but not to force it onto anyone else.
That said, Merry Christmas to all of you, or whatever holiday you wish to observe.

Not a Christian here either, but we all ought to live by the golden rule. After all, no other species is going to care if we live or die (ok maybe dogs, but that’s because we made them).

Merry Christmas, Yule, Solstice, and Birth of the Light God to you all :)

I have respect for all religions as long as they have respect for my right to believe as I wish. So have a Merry Christmas everyone; even you Pagans out there.

    Subotai,

I worship a God who prefers to fight His children in hand to hand combat in the middle of the night (Jacob) rather than be apart from us, who pays the workman who joined in the evening the same as the one who joined in the morning, and who dies alongside criminals and calls it His Glory.

I strongly suspect that when you meet Him, He will be pleased with you.

Very well said, Subotai! Precisely my feelings in the matter. Everyone needs to find his own way to the Truth, and we won’t know for sure until later which (if any of us) has gotten it right. I respect those who do not share my faith, as long as they don’t demand I share theirs instead.

As with Master Guns, I am also a Roman Catholic who respects the faith, or absence of same, of others who may hold beliefs that differ from mine. In Subotai’s excellent turn of phrase, as long as that faith or lack thereof neither harms me nor picks my pocket, it’s none of my concern. Just as my faith is no concern of anyone else.

Not surprisingly, Chinese New Year celebrations are huge events here in Asia, especially in places like Singapore and Hong Kong that are majority Chinese. Even here in Indonesia, where ethnic Chinese make up about 3% of the population, it’s still a national holiday and a great event, even for epicanthic-fold deficient people like me.

Merry Christmas to everyone, may you celebrate it in the way that’s best for you.
