Okay.    THIS is where I have a problem with religious types — or at least some of them.

It doesn’t matter the brand,  each have their share of people who take their “true” religion and attempt to make others bend to their wishes either forcefully or passively.

I was reading the paper this morning and came across a headline that caused me to blurt out “WHAT. THE. FUUUUCK!” in the middle of a restaurant, spilling a cup of coffee all over the table and onto the floor.  After apologizing to the waitress, I read the article:

(warning: you might want to move containers of liquids before reading…)

Muslim countries seek blasphemy ban

GENEVA — Four years after cartoons of the prophet Muhammad set off violent protests across the Muslim world, Islamic nations are mounting a campaign for an international treaty to protect religious symbols and beliefs from mockery — essentially a ban on blasphemy that would put them on a collision course with free speech laws in the West.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press show that Algeria and Pakistan have taken the lead in lobbying to eventually bring the proposal to a vote in the U.N. General Assembly.

If ratified in countries that enshrine freedom of expression as a fundamental right, such a treaty would require them to limit free speech if it risks seriously offending religious believers. The process, though, will take years and no showdown is imminent.

The proposal faces stiff resistance from Western countries, including the United States, which in the past has brushed aside other U.N. treaties, such as one on the protection of migrant workers.

Experts say the bid stands some chance of eventual success if Muslim countries persist. And whatever the outcome, the campaign risks reigniting tensions between Muslims and the West that President Barack Obama has pledged to heal, reviving fears of a “clash of civilizations.”

There’s more, but you get the gist.

Now look, I don’t give a fuck about someone’s religion.  To me, it is about as important as whether you like fat men or skinny women.  Or goats.  It is a personal thing.  I am going to be the last person you find that will ridicule you for your belief or faith.

But that won’t stop me from saying what I personally think about that belief or faith.  For the record, I find all organized religions to be… well, silly (just to be nice about it)

But because I consider something to be a fantasy, or social engineering, or just plain full of shit,  (and I haven’t even thought about Scientology yet) doesn’t mean I have to keep MY opinions to myself.  Not when every religion out there is trying to tell me that THEY are the true religion.

Ordinarily, I don’t get into religious conversations, because I would rather not have that inevitable argument and yelling match.  My general attitude on it is this:

If you volunteer what your faith is, I am likely to respond with “that’s nice” and change the subject.

But there are times when someone is going to keep pushing and I will then let them know what I think about it — and gull-durnnit, I am liable to be rather blasphemous about it.

If I deny the existence of a Judeo/Christian/Islamic “God”, then I am being “blasphemous” to each  of those faiths.  If you were to say YOUR __[insert your god of choice here]__ is “Da One™” then you have just dissed everyone else’s, and committed a blasphemous act to boot.

Now I don’t give a rat’s ass if a “Muslim Country” or for that matter, a “Christian Country” or even a “Flying Ravioli Monster” Country wants to enact religious laws for its citizens.  That is on them, and the rest of the world needs to stay the fuck out of it.  If you don’t like those particular laws, then don’t go there — and vice versa.

Oh, and feel free to talk about anything, while I go be blasphemous somewhere…
